Attend state rec lab, communications event

From Hill County 4-H

Hill County 4-H members kept busy in April, starting with the State 4-H Rec Lab, held in Joliet April 8-10. The theme was "Reach for the Stars" and there were 209 4-H'ers in attendancer.

Hill County 4-H'ers attending were Dexter Beck of the Bullhook Buffalos 4-H Club, Skylar Powell and Angelina Toth of the Bear Paw Beavers 4-H Club and Laine Shettel and Trent Shettel of the Milk River Raccoons 4-H Club. Jasmine Powell attended as a workshop presenter and Amanda Powell served as the chaperone.

Friday evening's event featured Team Building with Karen Grosz, where she led the 4-H members in a painting exercise as they set goals and worked within "shape" groups.

Saturday was a day full of workshops. Jasmine Powell led two workshop sessions on glass etching titled "An Itch to Etch." The 4-H members also attended workshops titled "Roughing It Easy/Camping on a Budget," "Tile Ink Coasters," "Wood & Nail Art" making string art 4-H clovers, "Let Your Light Shine" making fireflies from water bottles, "Wood Signs," and "Star Light Star Bright" making night lights out of wine bottles.

Saturday night included a semi-formal dress banquet at the Community Center, which featured keynote speaker Adam Lee Brooks. He told the 4-H members to be confident and sure of themselves. He also said lending a hand to those in need is a commendable gesture, and people should not be afraid to get involved – they may be the one needing help in the future so they should give when they can. The evening ended with a dance.

Sunday morning breakfast featured Todd Kesner from the Montana 4-H Center giving the 4-H members an insight of what the State 4-H office has been working on along with what the future holds for the office.

The Hill County 4-H'ers said they brought back many ideas to share, including workshops and games for the club and county level.

The month continued with the 2016 4-H Communications Day event held Sunday, April 24, at the Catholic Youth Center in Rudyard.

4-H members giving demonstrations were Skylar Powell, with "Show Your True Colors," in leathercraft dying; Angelina Toth with "Are You Ready?" in cat showmanship; and Kendall Domire with "Kendall's Waffles."

Kaytlyn Domire presented her illustrated talk titled "What's In My Box?" in an embroidery project. Katherine Windy Boy and Ki-iw Windy Boy gave their presentations on their swine projects and livestock quality assurance.

Skylar and Angelina each received a blue ribbon for their efforts and are now qualified to attend State 4-H Congress. Kaytlyn, Kendall, Katherine and Ki-iw each received a red ribbon for their efforts.

The judges were Connie Anderson, Katrin Finch and Tammy Duncan.

The 4-H representatives said they wanted want to thank the judges for their time and expertise, saying, "They provided awesome feedback to the members for improvement."
