Big Day in Box Elder: Northern lands star Jerrod Four Colors

BOX ELDER — Ever since he was little, Jerrod Four Colors dreamed of playing college basketball. And Wednesday, after signing his NAIA national letter of intent to play at Montana State University-Northern, he achieved that dream.

At a signing event held inside the gymnasium at Box Elder high school, Four Colors finalized his commitment to the Lights, while teammate Brandon The Boy signed to go to Rocky Mountain College.

"It feels great," Four Colors said. "Playing basketball in college has always been a dream of mine, so I am excited that I am going to be able to do that."

Four Colors, an All-State forward, helped lead Box Elder to the state championship in 2014 and played an even more central role this past season, when the Bears defeated Arlee for their second Class C state title in three seasons.

The Box Elder senior may have spent the past four years playing Class C basketball, but MSU-N head coach Shawn Huse said he believes Four Colors will have no problem fitting in at the collegiate level.

"We brought him in and had him go through some workouts with our team and he fit right in," Huse said. "That was something that really impressed us."

Four Colors, who averaged close to a double-double this past season for the Bears, played in the post quite often for Box Elder, but the wide-open way the Bears played, he is capable of contributing in multiple spots for the Lights in the future.

"Jerrod is a really talented basketball player," Huse said. "He's versatile and he's a very efficient player. He does a great job on the defensive end, he's athletic, he can rebound, he can score, he can shoot the ball, but more than that, I like his attitude. I think he will fit with us because we are very much about the team first, and I think he fits into that very well."

Four Colors said he was glad he got the opportunity to play at Northern, because if he didn't get the chance to play for the Lights, he was going to attend Montana State and put his days of playing basketball behind him.

However, the offer from Huse and the Lights eventually came and not just because of what Four Colors can do on the court but also because of what he can do off of it.

“Jerrod isn't just a great player, he's a great person," Huse said. "He shows what can happen when you make the right choices off the court. He takes his education very seriously and that's big because being a college basketball player, isn't easy. It takes a lot of hard work. Jerrod is someone that has worked very hard and that hard work is being rewarded."

Four Colors said that he is excited to get to work and that he is also happy about the fact that he will not have to go far from home to continue his career on the hardwood.

"I think it's pretty cool that I will be going to Havre," Four Colors said. "I like that I will get to be close to home and I won't get lonely in college like a lot of other freshman do."
