Pony tracksters rack up points at Eastern A

This past weekend marked the first ever Eastern A Super Divisional track meet and it was one that yielded some promising results for the Havre High track teams.

Although neither Blue Pony squad came away with a trophy, both put together competitive performances in the two-day meet in Laurel, which started Friday and was completed Saturday.

In the boys competition, Belgrade won the team title with 95 points. Sidney was second with 81, followed by Laurel with 75. Lewistown was fourth with 68 and Havre finished fifth with 62.5.

As far as the girls were concerned, Laurel ran away with things, finishing the meet with 107 points to easily claim the top spot. Lewistown finished second with 71 points and Livingston was third with 66.5. The Pony girls finished ninth with 23 points.

For most of the season, the Havre boys have been buoyed by their runners and that was the case again at the Eastern A, as HHS had a pair of divisional champs in the sprint. First, Nate Rismon took home an individual title in the 200 meters with a time of 23.16. Then, Michael Loftus matched him, by winning the 400 after running a 50.43.

Loftus, who racked up points in three events for Havre, also finished second in the 200 to Rismon (23.32) and also finished fourth in the 100 (11.33). Likewise, Rismon came in second in the 400 to Loftus after running a 50.81. The senior also notched a fourth-place finish in the pole vault (12-0).

While Rismon won an individual divisional title, he also helped Havre capture another in the 1,600 relay. Led by Rismon and Jacob LaBrie, as well as Ivar Aageson and Luke Karnauskas, the Ponies ran a 3:31 and fended off some tough competition to take home first place.

“Rismon really put us on his back in that one,” HHS head coach John Ita said. “If you were there you would know what I am talking about. We were behind by probably 20 meters and he came back and won by probably 15. He has just had a great season, he really has. He's just a blue collar guy and if I wasn't the coach of the team, he probably would be.”

While the Pony boys didn’t do much damage in the field events, they did score points there as Aageson joined Rismon by placing sixth in the pole vault (12-0). Nik Keller was sixth in the high jump with a jump of 5-8. Havre also came in third in the 400 relay after posting a 45.20.

The Havre girls may not have scored as many points as the boys, but they still managed some impressive performances as three different athletes placed in multiple events for HHS.

Naomi Terry, who has had a spectacular junior season, kept it going at divisionals, placing fourth in the 100 (13.11) and fifth in the 200 (28.17). Rachel David was another Pony girl who had a stellar day as she finished fifth in the 400 (1:02.73) and sixth in the 800 (2:28). In the hurdles, Logan Huebsch made her mark as she garnered third place in the 300 hurdles after running a time of 49.49. She also finished fourth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.62.

The Pony girls also managed to add points to their total in both relay events. The 400 relay team posted a time of 53.31, which was good enough for sixth place. However, the short relay team fell short of state, which required a top five finish. The 1,600 relay team, on the other hand, finished with a time of 4:20 in order to finish fourth.

The Havre girls had four other girls that didn’t place, but still did well enough to qualify for state and those were Ireland Coyne, who was seventh in the 300 hurdles, Kristen Nash, who was seventh in the discus, Amelia Beard, who finished ninth in the triple jump and Loni Waid, who was tenth in the pole vault.

On the boys side, Aageson also qualified in the 400 and Karnauskas made it in the 800. Austin Jones also qualified in the 3,200.

“I was really happy for our kids,” Ita said. “They worked really hard and they performed well. I didn't see the final point totals so I was really happy for both our boys and our girls. Naomi Terry, she has had a great season and Rachel David, she just shows up and competes every week. Our super divisional was really tough and if we could just add some points in the field events, we could be right there.”

All qualified athletes for Havre will advance to the Class A state meet, which will take place in Bozeman Friday and Saturday.
