Havre High's Warp goes right back to the gridiron

It’s already been a busy summer for Havre High’s Dane Warp. But, it’s about to get even busier.

Warp, who starred in last weekend’s Montana-Wyoming All-Star basketball series, will now shift gears, returning to football for the annual Badlands Bowl, which pits a Montana all-star team against all-star’s from North Dakota.

The 2016 Badlands Bowl will take place Saturday night in Dickinson, North Dakota, where Warp will be one of two quarterbacks for team Montana.

Warp, who’s coming off a brilliant performances of 23 and 19 points in back-to-back wins for the Montana all-star’s in basketball last weekend, while also being named Mr. Basketball by the Midlands Roundtable, returns to football this weekend. As a quarterback, Warp was a four-time Class A All-State selection, and finished his incredible career as the MHSA’s all-time leader in passing yards and passing touchdowns. Warp also broke many, many Havre High offensive records in his time at HHS.

And this weekend’s Badlands Bowl will mark the second-to-last football game of Warp’s career. He’ll also play quarterback for the East squad in next month’s Montana East-West Shrine Game.

This week, Warp will be flanked at the quarterback position by a familiar name in Whitefish’ Luke May. The duo were arguably the two best quarterbacks to play in Class A the last four seasons, and like Warp, who will play basketball at Carroll College, May is bringing his football career to a close, as he’ll compete in track and field for the University of Minnesota starting in the fall.

Warp’s Montana team is also flush with the top high school football players to graduate in 2016.

From Class A, along with Warp, the roster includes May, Chaffin Ross and Brian FauntLeRoy from state champion Whitefish, as well as Payton LaFrentz and Nate Simkins from Dillon. Belgrade’s Derek Marks, Butte Central’s Kyle Schulte, Billings Central’s Jacob Hadley and Micah Holt-Seavey, and Miles City’s Jaden Senger are also on the roster, and Whitefish standout Jed Nagler was selected, but is recovering from a knee injury.

Of course, the game is also a who’s who of players heading to both the University of Montana and Montana State this fall. Bobcat recruits include Hadley, Marks, CMR’s Karl Tucker, Bozeman High’s Will Martel, Huntley Project’s Michael Jobman, Troy’s Sean Opland and Townsend’s Jered Padmos. UM recruits include Townsend’s Jace Lewis, Boulder’s Trace Letexier, Billings Senior’s Devin Maua, Helena’s Cole Rosling and Bozeman’s Trace Bradshaw and Fairview’s Ben Hardy.

The Montana team is led by Whitefish head coach Chad Ross. Assistant coaches include Whitefish’ Eric May, Missoula Big Sky’s Matt Johnson, Miles City’s Kevin McAuliffe, Fairfield’s Les Meyer and Fairview’s Greg Hardy.

The 2016 Badlands Bowl will be played Saturday night at the Henry Biesiot Activities Center in Dickinson. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. M.S.T. and fans can go to http://www.badlandsbowl.com for radio and video broadcast information.
