Havre Police Department sets Citizens Police Academy

The Havre Police Department will run an eight-week Citizens Police Academy to let residents know about the inner working of the department.

Police Chief Gabe Matosich said the program will answer questions like: What is it like to be a patrol officer? Or do police solve a homicide in an hour like they do on television?’

The class will meet once a week for eight weeks starting Wednesday, July 27. Each class will be held 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

There will be an optional weekend event and perhaps a ride-along with a Havre patrol officer.

Topics, he said, will include programs on topics such as patrol and detective divisions, DUI enforcement, crash investigations and shooting probes.

The course will offer Taser and firearm training.

He said participants will be involved in all aspects of law enforcement and people will be taught to think like a criminal investigator.

Matosich said he hoped the program would increase the public’s understanding of what police do and how they operate.

People with questions or those interested in taking part in the program should call Assistant Chief Jason Barkus at 265-4361.
