Letter to the Editor: Blue Ponies are going to Washington, and they will be fantastic

Editor:

The Blue Ponies are marching in Washington, D.C., on July 4. They are going to be absolutely fantastic.

I have been hearing them practice over the past month and driven over to watch them for a few moments as they diligently practiced in the heat of the day on the dirt track at Havre High School.

As they marched down 5th Avenue Tuesday afternoon I was so filled with pride knowing that in a few short days they would be representing our community and our state in the nation’s capital city in the National Independence Day Parade. I have to admit there was a lump or three in my throat and my eyes were potentially sweating. They looked and sounded amazing.

I want to thank all of the volunteers who showed up to help with traffic at intersections. The city of Havre and our police department were so supportive on extremely short notice in helping to secure the parade route.

Their efforts were greatly appreciated. It was fantastic to see the Boys & Girls Club of the Hi-Line and First Lutheran Day Care by the Robins building.

Once again this community amazed me by the continued support that has been shown for this group of kids. The number of folks who lined 5th Avenue at 2:30 p.m. on a weekday was absolutely incredible.

A large majority of the other bands that will be marching in the Independence Day Parade compete year around and will be twice the size of the Havre High Marching Band. It is readily apparent the seriousness with which these students and their leader Mr. Johnke are approaching this event. I really get the sense that this group of students understands that they are not just marching for themselves, that they are marching for all of Havre High and their community.

I believe they understand that there were groups of students before them who helped them receive this great honor who never had the opportunity that is being afforded them. I believe they understand that for a school and community our size, opportunities like this most likely will not come along many more times.

They have put in the time. They are vested. Be proud Havre. Be proud Montana. The Blue Ponies are going to D.C. They are going to be fantastic.
