Donoven yard picked by Bullhook Blossoms Garden Club as August Yard of the Month

Bullhook Blossoms Garden Club has chosen the yard of Darlene and Lowell Donoven at 811 9th Street West as Yard of the Month.

As you enter the driveway to the Donoven home, you are greeted with a giant dragonfly whose wings are filled with broken blue glass fragments. Continuing on up the driveway, the eye is drawn to garden scenes painted on the walls surrounding the driveway. The spacious lawn is well-groomed and large planters of petunias and snapdragons add bright color to the surroundings.

The area of yard nearest the road has been tastefully developed into a flat rock garden with a birdbath in the center. Graceful paths wind through this garden, sprinkled with the same broken blue glass that gives the illusion of water trickling through a meandering stream bed.

Beyond the rock garden is a beautiful large planter filled with colorful snapdragons. Darlene says that this planter of snapdragons takes many gallons of water, but the dramatic effect is worth the water and time.

The backyard of the Donoven home is a little haven for them with a myriad of fruit trees surrounding the yard, providing privacy as well as fruit. A charming deck on the back of the house is like a little get-away with a private spot in a gazebo to enjoy any time of the day or evening.

It is obvious that lots of work goes into the Donoven yard and Lowell gives Darlene most of the credit. Darlene says she enjoys the gardening and will welcome guests to view it.
