Mariani continues to impress with the Bears

Marc Mariani might have modest numbers through the Chicago Bears’ first two NFL preseason games. But the praise he’s receiving in training camp, and the impact he’s making on a young Bears’ roster is anything but.

Last Thursday night, Mariani had just one grab for three yards in the Bears’ 23-22 loss at the New England Patriots. But what he does every day on the practice field, and what he brings to the Bears’ lockerroom is every bit as important as the numbers he’s put up so far in the preseason.

And, many in the Bears’ hierarchy agree.

“Marc is an excellent competitor,” said coach John Fox. “He’s a great teammate. He represents our organization well. He’s very competitive. That’s what we expect of Marc and that’s usually what Marc delivers.”

Mariani certainly delivered last season, when he recorded career-highs in both catches and yards. Last season Mariani produced first downs on 19 of his 22 receptions, including all 11 on third down. He also averaged 6.1 yards on 36 punt returns and 25.8 yards on 36 kickoff returns.

And though Mariani was thrust into a starting role a year ago mainly due to injuries to stars like Alshon Jeffrey, first-round pick Kevin White, and veteran Eddie Royal, the fact was, Mariani delivered time and time again, so much so, the Bears decided to bring him back for a third season in Chicago.

Now, Mariani is set to produce again, and Chicago star quarterback Jay Cutler thinks he will do just that.

“He just makes catches,” said Cutler. “He makes plays. He’s in the right spot. He does exactly what is asked of him. He’s the ultimate team guy. He’s out there making catches for us and he’s going to keep doing that.”

Mariani will get a chance to do that again when the Bears play their third preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs. On the Bears’ most recent depth chart, Mariani is listed as Jeffrey’s backup at the WR position, as well as the starting punt returner.

And, while he’s still battling in training camp the next two weeks to ensure a spot on the 53-man roster, there’s no denying that Mariani has not only made a big impression on the Bears’ organization, but he’s also finally found a home as a wide receiver in the NFL.

“Love him — love him,” Bears’ wide receiver coach Curtis Johnson said. “He can do everything. … He plays every position, knows the game. Physical. Tough. You watch him block. He’s one of the guys who is doing all those things. I really like Marc a lot.”

Mariani and the Bears play the Chiefs Saturday at Soldier Field before wrapping up the preseason with a trip to the Cleveland Browns Sept. 1.
