HHS students participate in Healthcare Summer Camp

Press release

HELENA — Alexandra McDermott, Maysie Smith and Michelle Rainey of Havre High School were selected to join a group of Montana high school students to participate in a five-day summer program aimed at developing the next generation of health care providers.

Hosted by the Montana AHEC — Area Health Education Centers — each MedStart camp immersed students in campus life while providing opportunities to explore a variety of health care careers through simulation activities and job shadows at local facilities. Students also attended college planning sessions to map out their career goals.

MedStart Camps were hosted June through August in Missoula, Great Falls, Butte, Billings and Miles City. More than 80 students were selected to participate in the camps following a rigorous application and recommendation process.

People should take the time to recognize McDermott, Smith and Rainey for their ambition and accomplishments, the association said.

The North Central and South Central AHECs are grant-funded programs hosted by the Montana Hospital Association. The mission of this office is to recruit, train and retain a health professions workforce committed to rural and underserved populations.

The centers work with students of all ages encouraging them to pursue careers in the high-skill, high-pay and high-demand health care industry.

The programs provides students with career exploration resources and opportunities to further their health care knowledge. AHECs are also the go-to source for finding health care jobs in Montana. As recruitment and retention specialists, staff works with more than 65 medical facilities statewide to place interested candidates throughout Montana.
