Local Golf Report: Saying good bye to the summer

From Tee to Green...

I’ll start my final From Tee to Green for the 2016 golf season with an apology. Well, only a little bit of one anyway. If you were wondering why there was no golf column last week, it was because I traded in golf balls for tennis balls.

I took an exciting vacation to New York City for the U.S. Open tennis tournament (more on that in a different column), hence, there was no golf column last week.

But, now that I’ve returned, so has the golf column, only this one, I’m sorry to say, is goodbye for the year. Yes, it’s time for me to focus on footballs, volleyballs, eventually basketballs, and all the sports that come with a new school year.

Of course, this being the last From Tee to Green for the season certainly doesn’t mean the golf is over. For starters, there’s Havre Blue Pony and MSU-Northern golf still to play. The Blue Ponies are in the middle of their 2016 season, and you can actually see them play this Saturday when they host the Havre Invitational at Beaver Creek Golf Course. And the Lights and Skylights are about to open their fall campaign. Northern will play at tournaments hosted by Montana Tech, Rocky Mountain College and UGF this fall, before picking up the rest of their season next spring.

So, as the competitive golf continues, I’d like to wish all Havre High and Northern golfers good luck on the remainder of their season.

Competitive golf came to an end at Prairie Farms Golf Course with the men’s club championship, which was held Aug. 29. To no one’s surprise, Havre’s Jeremy Jensen once again was crowned club champion with his round of 3-under-par 69. Way to go Jeremy. I have no idea how many club championships you have now, but I know you have plenty.

Speaking of championships, the Michelob Light team that won the Havre men’s league championship not long ago, also had Jim Heberly playing on that team this season. Jim has been al longtime player for the squad, and I wanted to make sure I mentioned him as part of the winning team. Sorry Jim, didn’t mean to leave you out.

And with that said, that’s it for another summer on the links. It went by way too fast. And while I’ll still play some golf here and there, and I know many of you will too, the summer is gone, and I won’t be talking to you in this column again until next April.

I’d like to take this time to thank everybody who helps me get the information I need to publish this column every week, including men’s league secretary Matt Hedstrom, women’s league secretary Ali Ward, as well as Doug Sheppard and many more who sent me information this year. Without all of you, this column wouldn’t have a whole lot in it, so I really appreciate all your help.

And on that note, it’s time for me to say goodbye. Golf is a great sport. It’s great in Havre, and it brings me a lot of joy to write this column every week. And while it may be a long winter this year, don’t worry, spring will come soon enough, and with it, golf courses will again spring to life. And so will this column.

I can’t wait.
