Hi-Line Football Roundup

Harlem, HLP score exciting first wins

While the high school football season continued to rage on this past weekend, one of the more interesting games along the Hi-Line took place in Rocky Boy as the Stars hosted the Harlem Wildcats.

Since Rocky Boy moved up to Class B it has been unable to field a varsity football team until this year and thus, it was the first meeting between Harlem and Rocky Boy since the Stars’ move up. And it was a hard-fought game between the two teams, but in the end, the Wildcats walked away with the 38-22 victory.

Chase Corcoran scored two touchdowns in the loss for Rocky Boy, with one rushing and one receiving. The Stars, who are 1-2 on the season, will take on Conrad Friday night in Conrad. Harlem, on the other hand, is 1-1 on the young season and will host Cut Bank in Harlem Friday.

Hays-Lodge Pole 36, Fort Benton 14

It has been some time since the Hays-Lodge Pole football team has won a game, years in fact. Yet, before the season, head coach Shawn Mount said it was coming and now, his words have finally come true as the Thunderbirds won in Fort Benton Friday night, 36-14, snapping a 39-game losing streak and giving the T-Birds their first victory in football since Oct. 2010.

HLP, which lost fourth-quarter leads in each of its first two games in Northern C 8-Man action, jumped out early on the Longhorns with a three-yard touchdown from Chance Main. Later, a 55-yard touchdown pass from Tyson Shambo to Frank Runs Above made it 16-0 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second, Shambo scampered 52 yards for a rushing touchdown, but two scores by Fort Benton made the score 22-14 at the intermission. Yet, in the fourth quarter, Shambo connected with his brother, Jace Shambo on a 11-yard scoring strike to push the lead to 30-14. Main put the nail in the coffin with a 13-yard scoring run that made it 36-14.

Shambo finished the game with a total of four touchdowns, two rushing and two passing, while Main also added a pair of rushing touchdowns in the win. HLP (1-2) will look for another win this Saturday, when the T-Birds will host Northern C rival Centerville. Fort Benton (0-3) will head to Chinook Friday to take on the Beeters in an effort to get its first win of the season.
