Happy on the Home Course

Blue Pony harriers take full advantage at the Havre Invitational

The Havre High cross country teams are blessed with just one home meet per season, so both teams know to make it count and, even though neither team won their home meet, that's exactly what they did Saturday in Havre.

In truth, both HHS teams fared well at the Havre Invitational, held at the course on the campus of Montana State University-Northern. The Blue Pony girls for instance, came up just shy of winning the meet after finishing with 58 points. Lewistown won it with 53. Glasgow was third with 66 and Browning was fourth with 76.

On the boys side of the competition, Havre also put together a solid finish, ending up third with 68 points. Lewistown won the meet with relative ease, thanks to just 29 points and Glasgow was second with 52.

“A lot of the kids ran a pretty good race,” HHS head coach Josh Holt said. “I think the course was a little tougher than it has been in the past few years, and I don’t think a lot of teams expected that. But I thought that our kids ran really well.”

While a Havre runner may not have won the boys meet, a Hi-Line athlete did as Isaiah Runs Above of Hays-Lodge Pole took home the individual crown with a time of 16:50. Yet, many Havre boys did place high, led by Austin Jones, who finished eighth after running a 17:37.

Jakob Keller was another Pony boy who finished well, coming in 10th after posting a time of 17:39.21. Impressively, Havre had three others runners finish in the top 25 in the boys race as Trevor Williams was 15th (18:12). Quinn Reno was 21st (18:36) and Barrett Kilgore was 24th (18:54).

“I was really proud of our kids,” Holt said. “They have been working hard and improving. Austin hasn’t been in the 17’s all year and he did that. And Trevor Williams, who is in his first year, has really come along. So I like where we are headed. I am excited about it.”

Noah Azure also finished 35th after running a 19:42 and Aylan Pratt was 42nd with a time of 20:31.

The Pony girls matched the boys by having four different runners finish in the top 25 led by Kadia Miller, who notched a second-place finishing after running a time of 20:30. Yet, Miller wasn't the only Pony to crack the top 10, as Nicole Parsons was eighth and Kaylee Nystrom was ninth. Amelia Miller also ran a strong race and had a time of 23:19.76 to finish 23rd.

“Kadia has just been excellent,” Holt said. “The things that she has been able to do are amazing. She is still learning things like how to pace herself but has done an exceptional job this year.”

Melanie Jones also ran well, posting a 23:45 and finishing 28th. Meggie Zook also finished 44th after running a time of 26:22, while Lilly Taly was 45th with a time of 26:53.

Both Havre teams will be back in action this week, when they will take part in the Preview Meet in Helena. Holt said, his teams are excited to go and compete.

“I know the kids are really excited about the preview meet,” Holt said. “They have been talking about it since the Mountain West, so that will be exciting and it should be a good challenge for us.”
