Wildcats beat Poplar at home; Hawks, Knights win key conference rivalry games

It was another exciting weekend of high school football along the Hi-Line and no game was more exciting than the one between Harlem and Poplar last Friday night.

The two teams combined for 76 points, including 36 in the fourth quarter, as the Wildcats held off a late rally at home for a 46-30 win, their second of the season.

At the start of the game, it was all Wildcats, as Damon Adams rushed for three first half touchdowns that covered 43, 77 and 33 yards. Tevin Messerly also aided Harlem in building a 40-0 lead as he threw a touchdown, ran for another and threw or ran three successful two-point conversions.

Yet in the fourth quarter, the Indians rallied and scored four touchdowns to get back in the game, but a late, 48-yard touchdown run by Taggart Devaney iced the win for the Wildcats.

“It means a lot to get our second win,” Adams said. “It’s been awhile since we have won two games so that’s something we can be proud of.”

Harlem, which is 2-3, will play Glasgow on the road this Friday.

North Star trimmed the deficit early in the third quarter, but another touchdown run by Alderdice made it 28-20.

From there, the Knights scored the final 27 points in the game, as Miller scored three rushing touchdowns and Keeven Borlaug also caught a touchdown pass.
