Hawks earn a Northern C playoff berth

This time of year, there’s a lot on the line for a bunch of high school football teams. But few teams on the Hi-Line had more on the line than the Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks this past weekend.

Playing in their final home game of the season, on senior night, the Hawks needed to beat arch rival Power-Dutton-Brady to secure a berth in the Class C playoffs Friday night in Chester. And the Hawks did exactly that.

After starting the season with two straight losses, CJI had been on a roll the last month, but so had the Titans. So Friday night’s game was indeed a big showdown. But, behind over 400 yards rushing, including 200 from Brett Henke, the Hawks blitzed the Titans 38-22, putting them back in the playoffs with a win this Wednesday.

CJI got touchdowns from Cory Richter, Henke and Clark Diemert to jump out to a 20-0 first-quarter lead, and though the Titans answered with 16 points in the second quarter, CJI’s defense stiffened, allowing just one touchdown the rest of the way, while Henke finished with four TD runs.

CJI (5-3) will wrap up the regular season with a game at winless Fort Benton Wednesday night.

Geraldine/Highwood 57, Big Sandy 19

There was also a slim hope Friday night that the Big Sandy Pioneers could get to the Six-Man playoffs, but, the Geraldine/Highwood Rivals squashed those hopes rather quickly.

In Big Sandy, the Rivals scored 28 unanswered points to start the game, in what turned out to be a 57-19 romp, eliminating Big Sandy from playoff contention.

Laurence Alderdice scored three times for the Pioneers, but the Big Sandy defense surrendered over 400 yards rushing in the loss.

Big Sandy (3-4) will finish the regular season at Augusta Wednesday afternoon.

Valier 61, North Star 27

The North Star Knights had already locked up a Six-Man playoff berth, but they still had plenty to play for Friday night as well.

North Star was looking at winning the North Division championship, and a win over Valier would have gotten them one step closer. Instead, it was the Panthers who would clinch the conference title with a 61-27 win over the Knights Friday night in Valier.

The loss dropped the Knights to 5-3 overall and into third place in the North Division. North Star will try and move up to second place and earn a home playoff game when they take on Geraldine/Highwood Wednesday afternoon in Rudyard.

Choteau 64, Rocky Boy 20

Rocky Boy wrapped up its first home schedule of District 1B football Friday night, by hosting the Choteau Bulldogs. And while the Stars had one of their best offensive outputs of the year, the Bulldogs won going away.

In a 64-20 romp, Choteau tallied nearly 500 yards of rushing, while the Stars got two Jarrell Gopher touchdown passes to Cordell Small, and a rushing TD by Cade Galbavy.

Rocky Boy (1-7) finishes its first Class B season Friday night in Poplar.

The Malta Mustangs blasted Harlem 56-8, in large part due to Malta scoring 35 unanswered points to start the game. Corbin Brockie scored a 60-yard touchdown in the third quarter to give the Wildcats their only points of the contest.

Harlem (2-6) will wrap up the regular season Friday night in Conrad.

In Cascade, the Beeters were dominated by the Badgers 45-8, with Chinook’s offense being shut down for much of the game.

Chinook (2-6) will look to finish on a high note when the Beeters visit struggling Hays-Lodge Pole Wednesday afternoon.

Simms 56, HLP 0

After a promising start to the season, the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds have now lost six straight games. Included in that was a 56-0 loss at Simms Friday night.

The HLP defense held strong early, as Simms led just 14-0 at halftime, but the Tigers exploded for 26 points in the third quarter, and, the Simms defense shut out the Thunderbirds for the remainder of the game.

The T-Birds (1-7) wrap up the season with a home game against Chinook Wednesday afternoon.

Heart Butte 70, Box Elder 64

It’s also been a rough season for the Box Elder Bears, and Heart Butte added to that Saturday afternoon, as the Warriors stunned the Bears 70-65 in a Six-Man shootout.

In a wild game, the Bears watched as Chase Kipp set a new state record for rushing yards in a game with 597 yards to go with eight touchdowns for Heart Butte. Kipp’s 33-yard run in the fourth quarter sealed the win for the Warriors, while Box Elder got five touchdowns from Tanner Parisian in the loss.

The Bears (2-5), who will finish the regular season against North Division champion Valier Wednesday, trailed just 37-36 at halftime after scoring 28 points in the second quarter. But Kipp’s performance was just too much to overcome.
