Pony spikers best Browning in four

Havre celebrates senior night tonight against Lewistown

The Havre High volleyball team needs two wins this week to avoid a play-in match for the Eastern A Divisional, and Thursday night inside the HHS gymnasium, the Blue Ponies got the first thanks to a win over Browning in four sets.

The Indians, who are winless in the Central A this year, actually won the first game of the match. Browning even threatened to win the second, but some key points by senior Naomi Terry allowed Havre to rally. The Ponies won that game and the match by the scores of 16-25, 27-25, 25-17 and 25-15.

"We just didn't come ready to play," HHS head coach Tamecia Jarvis said. "I don't think they thought that Browning was going to play that well. But they are a scrappy team and it was good we were able to come back from that."

After dropping the first game by nine points, Havre came out strong in the second set and eventually built an 18-13 advantage. However, a 9-1 run by Browning put the Indians back in front, 22-21. Back-to-back aces by Naomi Terry, as well as another key point by Terry later in the set, put Havre in position to win the game and HHS did just that thanks to ace from Claire Worm. That gave Havre the 27-25 win and tied the match and 1-1.

From that point on, the Ponies were a different team. Havre cruised to an easy victory in the third set after scoring five of the first six points. In the fourth set, HHS scored six of the first eight points and took a commanding 14-4 lead after consecutive kills by Paige Nelson. When it was all said and done, Havre won the third set by eight and the fourth by 10 en route to its seventh win of the season and its third in conference play.

"I think the big thing for us is we actually started to play," Jarvis said. "We actually started to work as a team and that's what made the difference."

In the win, the Ponies racked up 30 kills, 12 aces, six blocks, 21 assists and 78 digs. Terry was a key player in the match for Havre as she finished with team high’s in digs with 18 and assists with 12. She also had five aces.

Freshman Sam Oliver also had a big night, registering a match-high six aces, while Nelson also made an impact with a team-high eight kills and 17 digs. Senior Jacey McDonald pitched in with seven kills and four blocks in the win.

Havre (7-11, 3-4) will take on Lewistown tonight inside the HHS gymnasium. Start time is set for approximately 7 p.m. With a win, Havre will clinch third in the final Central A standings. A loss will mean fourth place for HHS.

"We need to come out with a lot more energy than we did tonight," Jarvis said. "Hopefully, senior night will help with that."
