Hi-Line Girls Roundup: North Star sweeps District 9C games

Several girls basketball teams closed out the 2016 portion of the season with some exciting games this week. And when the action returns to the Hi-Line in January, teams will already be gearing up for the postseason.

On Tuesday night, in Class B action, the Rocky Boy Morning Stars and Harlem Wildcats, two very much-improved teams, staged an epic rivalry game in Rocky Boy. And, trailing by two points in the fourth quarter, the Morning Stars pulled off a thrilling, 56-54 win. Rocky Boy fell behind by seven in the first period, but the game was tied at halftime, before Harlem took a slim lead into the final stanza.

Jaylynn Mitchell scored 14 points for a balanced Rocky Boy attack that also got 13 points from Maya Reed. L’Tia Lawrence scored 18 points for Harlem, while Autumn Eagleman added 15.

The Big Sandy Pioneers also took to the floor Tuesday night, but struggled in a non-conference game against Denton-Geyser-Stanford. The Bearcats outscored the Pioneers 25-11 in the second half to win 51-28. Caitlyn Bailey had nine points for the Pioneers.

It was a big week for the North Star Knights, as they captured a pair of tight District 9C wins. On Tuesday, North Star traveled to Hays-Lodge Pole and came home with a 50-41 victory. Tied at 13-13 at the end of the first quarter, North Star pulled ahead in the second and held off the Thunderbirds from there.

Chelsea Donaldson scored 12 points for the Knights, while Paij Peterson and Katelin Harvey added eight each. Rayleaigh Kirkaldie scored nine points for the T-Birds.

North Star was back home on Wednesday night, taking on the unbeaten Fort Benton Longhorns, and in a wild game, the Knights won 60-57 in overtime. The Knights were behind in the fourth quarter, but outscored the Longhorns 16-12 to force overtime, then they outscored them 13-10 in the extra frame.

Kate Hansen had 15 points for the Knights, while Peterson added 14. Alia Evans and Maddie Thompson each scored 14 points for the Longhorns.

Also on Wednesday night, the Chinook Sugarbeeters, who also played Chester-Joplin-Inverness on Tuesday, were no match for the Box Elder Bears. In Box Elder, the Bears crushed the Beeters 67-27. Box Elder outscored Chinook 45-13 in the first half and the game was never in doubt.

Lilly Gopher scored 15 points and Maddie Wolf Chief added 13 for the Bears, while Sierra Swank and Brooke Elliot each scored eight for the Beeters.

On Thursday night, the HLP Thunderbirds picked up their second win of the 9C season, as they beat Big Sandy 63-54 in Big Sandy. Rayleigh Kirkaldie scored a game-high 21 points for HLP, while Jaylyn Cline poured in 28 points for the Pioneers.
