Havre veteran Michael Cuneo talks Friday about problems he has had with the Veterans Choice Program while standing in front of the Merrill Lundman Department of Veterans Affairs Outpatient Clinic. Cuneo said he has received excellent care since moving to Havre but now will no longer be able to receive care at Northern Montana Hospital since the hospital dropped out of the Veterans Choice Program.
Northern Montana Hospital has dropped out of the Veterans Choice Program - which was supposed to be an answer for veterans too far from a VA clinic or those in need of faster attention - because the program's third party was "an unreliable payer," Julianne LaSmith of the hospital said.
State VA officials and politicians agree that the problem common-denominator with the Choice Program has been Health Net, the third-party administrator that schedules appointments and pays providers under the Choice Program.
