Hi-Line Girls Roundup: Rocky Boy, Turner score big wins

Christmas break went by fast. But now that the high school basketball season has returned, the next two months are going to go even faster.

Girls basketball on the Hi-Line restarted this past week with some exciting games and excellent performances. Included in that was the Rocky Boy Morning Stars, who started what was a big week, with a 58-50 win over Shelby last Tuesday night. Rocky Boy jumped out to a 16-6 lead and got 14 points from Sean Henry, 12 from Adrienne Gopher and 11 by Jaylynn Mitchell in the victory.

Things didn’t go as well for Harlem Tuesday, as the Wildcats were doubled-up by Malta 66-31. The M-Ettes scored 23 points in the first quarter, and Harlem couldn’t catch up. Kailee Henry led the Wildcats with 10 points.

District 9C hoops also returned last Tuesday where the Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks edged the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds 48-41 in Hays. Kendahl Knapton led the way for CJI with 13 points, while Korrin Harmon and Khloe Kammerzell combined for 20 more. The T-Birds got 10 points each from Mariah Stiffarm and Tahlia Werk.

Thursday night in Havre, the North Star Knights were in action against the Havre High junior varsity, but the Knights couldn’t keep up with the Blue Ponies in a 41-25 loss. Paij Peterson scored eight to lead the Knights, while Ryen Olson poured in a game-high 14 points for HHS.

The Knights did rebound however. Friday night, North Star held off arch rival CJI 51-44.

In another key 9C game Friday night, the Fort Benton Longhorns were simply no match for powerhouse Box Elder, as the Bears thumped the Longhorns 60-35, one night after blasting Big Sandy 72-11 in Box Elder.

Against Fort Benton, Box Elder raced out to a 35-21 lead, then held the Horns to just 14 second-half points. Lilly Gopher scored 17 points for Box Elder, while Kiya Morsette added 12. Coya Knack and Alia Evans combined for 23 points for the Longhorns.

In a meeting of former District 2B rivals Friday night, Harlem went to Chinook and left with a 42-33 victory. The Wildcats played great defense throughout the game, and got 21 points from Kailee Henry on offense. Sierra Swank scored 14 for the Sugarbeeters.

And while Rocky Boy played outstanding all week long, the Morning Stars came up short against Malta Friday night. The M-Ettes went into Rocky Boy and won 62-39 behind 29 points from Sophia Stiles. Jaylynn Mitchell led the Morning Stars with 10 points.

Yet, one night later, the Morning Stars pulled off a huge 1B win. On the road at Choteau, a team that has been so dominant in recent years, Rocky Boy came away with a 52-50 win. The Morning Stars trailed by five at the half, but pulled ahead in the third and then held off the Bulldogs down the stretch. Mitchell had another huge game scoring 24 points, while Sean Henry added 19 in the big win.

Speaking of big wins, the Turner Tornadoes got one on Saturday night, too. At home, the Tornadoes beat Chinook for the first time in ages, as they won 41-33. Turner used a 19-9 second-quarter run to take a lead it would never relinquish.

Raegan Conlan scored 11 points for the balanced Tornadoes, who also got nine from Rylee Conlan. Brooke Elliot paced the Beeters with 13 points.

Fort Benton bounced back well from its loss to Box Elder by crushing HLP Saturday night in Hays, 60-21. Coya Knack scored 15 points, Alia Evans added 11 and Maddie Thompson chipped in 10 for the Longhorns, while Latasha Kirkaldie scored five for the T-Birds.

CJI also bounced back from its loss to North Star with a close, 46-37 win over Big Sandy Saturday night in Big Sandy. The Hawks scored 19 points in the first quarter and then held off the Pioneers’ comeback effort the rest of the way.

Korrin Harmon paced CJI with 12 points, while Kendahl Knapton added 11. Jaylyn Cline scored 17 and Jenna Leader added 12 for the Pioneers.

In District 2B action, Saturday night was another rough one for the much-improved Harlem Wildcats, as they played another Class B powerhouse, the Glasgow Scotties, who buried the Wildcats, 46-26. L’Tia Lawrence led Harlem with 10 points and Kailee Henry added eight in the loss.
