Stars shine too bright for Blue Ponies

ROCKY BOY - The Havre High boys basketball team traveled to Rocky Boy Saturday hoping for a second straight win, and to build some momentum for the second half of the season. Yet, the Blue Ponies ran into a buzz saw and got run out of the building.

Rocky Boy ran up and down the floor all night on the Ponies, scoring at will on the fast break. When it was all said and done, the final score was Stars 70, Ponies 42.

"We just were not ready to play," HHS head coach Curt Leeds said. "We didn't play Friday, so we only had one game that we had to play, so we really should be able to get up and play hard for that game. But for whatever reason, we just weren't ready to go."

Havre may not have been ready for tip off, but Rocky Boy certainly was and the Stars flew out of the gates by scoring the first 10 points of the game. Jacob LaBrie scored for Havre to make it 10-2, but the Stars scored the next six to go ahead 16-2. At the end of the opening stanza, it was 19-6 Rocky Boy.

In the second quarter, the onslaught continued. Chase Corcoran made a deep 3-pointer, which was answered by Havre's Ivar Aageson. Yet, the Stars closed the half on a 12-1 run and took a 36-14 lead into intermission.

With Havre needing momentum to start the third quarter, the Stars made sure HHS got none. Kendall Windy Boy opened the half with a 3-point play, then Rocky Boy quickly got another from Kendall Small and suddenly, the lead was 42-14. The Rocky Boy advantage grew to 36 points on two different occasions in the third quarter, and the Stars led 56-28 by the end of it.

The two teams each scored 14 points in the fourth quarter, but by then, the outcome had already been decided. Windy Boy, the big man inside for the Stars, dominated. He finished with a game-high 19 rebounds and had numerous offensive rebounds. Small also had a stellar outing for the Stars, tying Windy Boy with 19 points, while Corcoran ended with 12 and Ben Iron Eyes had 10. Nate Korb was the high scorer for Havre with 13 points. Ryan Bakke also put together a solid effort with nine.

"It's really tough when they have a big guy like that," Leeds said. "We just don't have anyone to match up with him, so it makes them hard for us to guard. Hopefully, turning around and playing Browning (Monday) will be good for us."

The game between Havre and Browning had been scheduled for Friday night in Browning. However, due to road closures on Highway 2, the game was postponed. The Ponies and Indians will make up the game tonight in Browning. Start time is scheduled for 5:30.
