Ponies sweep Browning

For the first time this season, the Havre High girls basketball team hosted a team from the Central A conference. But just as the Blue Ponies have been doing on the road, they took care of business at home, with impressive efficiency.

In a game that was supposed to be played last Friday, but was rescheduled, Havre dominated from start to finish en route to a 64-49 victory Monday night inside the HHS gymnasium. The Ponies trailed just twice in the game, with its last deficit coming at 6-4. From that point, even though it was close at times, they never seemed to lose control.

“Yeah it felt good,” HHS head coach Dustin Kraske said. “The kids played well, and this is a big week for us and we kicked it off well.”

The Ponies are now 8-1 overall, and 4-0 in the Central A conference. Livingston and Belgrade, two conference opponents HHS has already beaten will come to Havre this Friday and Saturday and with two wins, the Ponies will have a stranglehold on the top seed.

Havre is in that position after yet another dominant all-around performance. The Ponies had three players score in double figures, led by the 19 points of Danielle Wallace. The junior had six first-quarter points as HHS built a 20-13 advantage at the end of the first quarter, she then scored seven of Havre’s 12 second-quarter points as the Ponies went into halftime leading 32-27.

“Our bigs did a great job tonight,” Kraske said. “We did a great job of getting them the ball. Danielle did a great job around the basket and Kristen Nash also gave us some really good minutes.”

Yet, early in the third quarter, Browning pulled to within three points at 32-29. However, Naomi Terry promptly answered with a 3-point play. Havre got another bucket from Wallace and shortly after, a 3-point play from Kyndall Keller, who caught a home-run pass from Terry, before getting the hoop and the harm. She converted the old-fashioned 3-point play and the lead was suddenly 42-32.

The Lady Indians did their best to hang around in the fourth quarter, but timely treys by both Terry and Keller in the final minutes kept them at bay and locked up the 15-point victory.

Wallace finished with the game-high 19, but Keller added 16 points, 14 of them coming in the second half, including a 9-of-9 effort from the free-throw line. Terry also pitched in with 11 for HHS and Kristen Nash had eight. Marselena Whiteman was the top scorer for Browning with 13.

“It was really nice to win at home,” Wallace said. “The wings and point guards really stepped up and they did a great job with their passes.”

While the Havre girls took on Browning at home, the Pony boys paid Browning a visit Monday night in another rescheduled game. Ultimately, the contest between the two Central A rivals came down to the final seconds, but thanks to a slew of defensive stops, Havre notched the 52-49 win.

The Ponies led early, going ahead 14-10 at the end of the first quarter, but the Indians led by two at halftime and 42-41 going into the fourth quarter. Yet, Havre managed to build a 52-49 edge in the final minute and turned the Indians away multiple times as they tried to tie the game. Browning’s final possession resulted in a turnover and HHS ran out the clock.

Ivar Aageson led all scorers in the game with 13 points, Isaac Warp added 11 after knocking down three shots from beyond the arc and Tanner Parsons, a freshman, scored 10 after hitting two of his own shots from deep.

With the win, Havre improved to 3-7 on the season and 2-2 in conference play. The Havre boys will also host Belgrade and Livingston in back-to-back home games this Friday and Saturday inside the HHS gymnasium.
