New sign lists Havre High School state championships

A new sign shows people coming into Havre the proud record of Havre High School activities.

A sign created by Beaver Creek Designs lists all of the state championsips Havre High School teams have earned going back to the 1921 Havre High School state football championship -an championship before the term Blue Ponies was coined for the 1926 state championship Havre football team.

Shawn Holden, owner of Holden's Hot Wheels and Beaver Creek Designs, said he is proud he could work on the project to promote the high school activities, replacing the worn sign that had listed the dates.

Holden said he recommended reversing the color scheme so the new sign is blue with white lettering.

"I think it's a little bit more noticeable coming into town," he said.

Some of the lettering had fallen off of the previous sign, he added.

"I was glad we could make that change," he said. "It needed to be done.

The design of the project also makes it very easy to add to the list, Holden said.

Les Odegard said NorthWestern Energy also made a donation for the project to put up lighting so it can be seen at night.

Odegard said the Booster Club plans to erect an identical, lighted sign on the east end of town later this year. Holden's wife, Booster Club Board member Christy Holden, said she - and her husband - have been active with the club for years, raising money to help activities purchase items ranging from shorts for the tennis team to uniforms and clothes for band and choir as well as supporting activities with funding for expenses like meals when activities are on trips.

She added that she is glad the club supports all activities, not just sports.

"That's what makes me proud to be a part of this," Holden said.

Shawn Holden said they would be busy again this week working the concessions at the District 9C basketball tournament at Havre High.

Holden's Hot Wheels shop manager Damian Miller said the project involved four or five people including Alvin Schumacher of Beaver Creek Designs, Havre High School Activities Director Dennis Murphy providing information and proofing the sign and several other Holden's employees helping build the sign, cut the vinyl and erect the finished product.
