Turner, CJI girls stay alive in the 9C

The Turner Tornadoes and Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks are still alive at the District 9C girls basketball tournament.

Thursday morning, CJI bounced back from an opening-round loss to North Star with a 67-50 win over Hays-Lodge Pole inside the Havre High School gymnasium.

CJI, which advanced to face Chinook in another loser-out game this morning, broke open a close first quarter with a 24-point second quarter. The Thunderbirds, who were eliminated with the loss to the Hawks, rallied for 20 points in the fourth stanza, but it wasn’t enough.

CJI (6-14) got a huge 23 points and three 3-pointers from Kendahl Knapton. In all, the Hawks hit nine triples, with Korrin Harmon scoring 14 points, while Khloe Kamerzell and Payton Hawks each scored 12. HLP got a game-high 24 points by Rayleigh Kirkaldie, who buried three shots from downtown.

The winner of the CJI/Chinook game moves on to play in tonight’s consolation game at 7.

Meanwhile, Turner, which lost a heartbreaker to Chinook in the opening round, had little trouble with Big Sandy in a loser-out game Thursday morning. The Tornadoes beat the Pioneers 45-28 to move on and face North Star in a loser-out game this morning. The winner of that game will face either CJI or Chinook in the consolation game tonight, with a berth in the Northern C on the line.

Turner led the Pioneers just 14-10 at halftime, but a 17-6 third-quarter run vaulted the Tornadoes into the next round. Rylee Conlan led Turner with 16 points, while Ella Billmayer scored 12. Big Sandy, which was eliminated with the loss, got a team-high nine points by Jessica Roth.
