Stars rise to the District 1B title

Rocky Boy wins a championship, Harlem advances to Northern B

While the District 9C tournament may have been the local focus, other hoops teams from along the Hi-Line took part in postseason tournaments this past weekend with Rocky Boy and Harlem taking part in the 1B and 2B district tournaments.

Rocky Boy went 3-0 over the weekend and beat Cut Bank Saturday 68-63 to win the 1B. Harlem, on the other hand, finished fourth in the 2B, but did enough to advance to the Northern B Divisional March 2-4 in Cut Bank.

Both teams were in action Thursday. Rocky Boy opened the 1B against Conrad and stomped the Cowboys, 60-44. Chase Corcoran scored 17 points to lead the Stars, while Ben Iron Eyes had 15 along with Kordell Small.

Harlem took on Wolf Point Thursday in a win-or-go-home game and the Wildcats won and advanced by the slimmest of margins 40-39. Brad Cichosz scored 12 to lead the way for Harlem. Terry Sand Crane added 10.

In the 1B semifinals Friday, Rocky Boy took on Choteau and overwhelmed the Bulldogs with a 26-point first quarter that gave the Stars a 12-point lead. Rocky Boy scored 12 in the second, but 21 in the third and 22 in the fourth to pull away. Iron Eyes finished with 27 points. Small finished with 20 and Windy Boy had 11.

Harlem also played Friday in the semifinals of the 2B, but was defeated soundly by Malta 51-21. The Wildcats trailed 6-4 after the first quarter, but were outscored 21-4 in the second to take command. Sand Crane scored eight in the loss, Cichosz added five. Saturday, Harlem played Poplar for third place in the 2B and despite being within three points at halftime, the Wildcats fell 63-50. Sand Crane and Lane Allen both scored 12 points. Corbin Brockie also pitched in with 10.

Rocky Boy actually trailed 31-25 at halftime of the 1B championship game against Cut Bank, but a 23-point third quarter and 20 points in the fourth erased the deficit and gave the Stars a five-point win. Iron Eyes led Rocky Boy with 23 points. Jerrell Gopher added 17, Corcoran had 12 and Windy Boy wound up with 10.

The Stars, as the top seed from the 1B will play Harlem, the fourth-seeded team from the 2B in the opening round of the Northern B Divisional tournament. The two teams will meet March 2 at 1 p.m.
