Celebrating History: New law firm location

by Emily Mayer

Local news items in the March 3, 1917 issue of The Havre Plaindealer were few but interesting. In business news, we find these two columns:

LOCAL LAW FIRM IN NEW QUARTERS

Their increasing business having outgrown the former quarters on the third floor of the Masonic temple, the law firm of Griggs & Rhodes was this week transferred to a four room suite of offices in the southwest corner of the Temple. The new offices have been fitted up in such a way that they are considered the best in northern Montana.

Attorney F. A. Carnal has taken the third floor quarters vacated by Griggs & Rhodes.

ALLEGED GAMBLERS PUT UNDER ARREST

The first raid upon an alleged gambling room since the closing order went into effect was pulled Thursday night by forces from the sheriff’s office acting under the instructions of County Attorney Griggs, and resulting in fifteen or more alleged violators of the gambling law being gathered into the dragnet. The room Kaste’s cigar store and a lot of chips and other gambling paraphernalia was taken up. All the participants have been cited to appear in court. It is a case for the district court, and the date of hearing has not yet been set.

For the past month plain clothes men have been working in Havre and all points along the high line west of the city, and it is said that they have evidence which will result in the issuance of warrants for at least ten other persons who will be charged with violations of the gambling law.

It is the intention of the sheriff and county attorney to put a stop to the gambling evil in Hill county, even if they have to make daily raids upon the points where gambling is said to be indulged in.

And for society news, we have these great stories:

LYCEUM TAXED TO CARE FOR CROWD

The largest number of people ever attending a dance was present at Lyceum hall Thursday evening to enjoy the first annual ball given by the Havre Central Labor Council. Even with the floor crowded with dancers, every available seat was occupied, and those in attendance are loud in praise of the Central Laborites as excellent entertainers.

Friends Greet Newlyweds.

One of the royal chariots belonging to the Stampede outfit was commandeered by the friends of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schick, who quietly wed and as quietly departed without letting anyone know of the happy event, on last Tuesday the newlyweds were given a lengthy ride, with an escort of honor, through the principal streets of the city.

After detention for a suitable time the bride and groom were reunited, and are now temporarily ensconced at Hotel Havre. Upon the completion of the Yeon apartments, Mr. and Mrs. Schick will take quarters therein.

Kensington for Visitor.

Mrs. Hattie Greenwade, a former resident of Havre but now of California, was honored Tuesday afternoon when Mrs. Rathbone and Mrs. F. O. Black entertained at Kensington.

Cut flowers were used in decoration thruout the rooms and also as dainty favors for each guest. Almost fifteen intimate friends of Mrs. Greenwade were present.
