Hill County safety tips

Home ownership is both a blessing and a curse. While it is wonderful to have that place of your own, it also comes with oftentimes hidden hazards.

• Clogged dryer exhaust ducts. Keep them clean, as dryer lint easily catches fire.

• Dirty chimneys. Creosote buildup from wood burning fireplaces is also highly combustible.

• Water heaters. High water temperatures can cause accidental burns.

• Bad DIY wiring. This can lead to electrical fires, unless you are well educated on wiring, this also is best left to professionals.

• Carbon monoxide poisoning. Odorless, colorless and flammable, this is deadly to people and pets. Install CO alarms for added safety to your home.

• Icicle buildup on the eaves. To avoid an icicle falling off your eaves and hitting someone, it is best to knock them off your home.

• Lead Paint. Check with the Hill County Health Department for safe ways to deal with lead paint.

• Radon gas. This is found naturally in the soil. A kit can be purchased to test; however, cleanup is best left to professionals.

• Squirrels. These critters are a relative newcomer to this area. Cute, but they can also wreak havoc on electrical insulation, increasing the potential for fire. Add steel mesh to openings to keep them out of your home.
