Class AA boys rule the HIT inside the Armory Gymnasium

The Class AA boys team was looking to win a third straight team title at the Hi-Line Invitational Basketball tournament and after dominating the competition this past weekend at the Armory Gymnasium on the campus of Montana State University-Northern, the 3-peat was completed.

The Class AA team swept through the HIT, winning all three of its round robin games and then knocking off the Class C squad for the championship Saturday night, 99-78. Steven Fisher scored 25 points in the title game. Rollie Worster added 19. Drew Huse, who was named the tournament MVP, scored 12. Jaren Maki, who is committed to play football at Northern next season, scored 17 points to lead Class C. Frank Runs Above of Hays-Lodge Pole also contributed with 12.

Huse took home the MVP award after averaging 15 points a game in the four wins for Class AA. Derrius Collins, another Class AA player, earned the defensive player of the tournament award and Runs Above, was named Mr. Hustle.

While the tournament concluded Saturday, the action got underway Thursday with the Class C team taking on Class A. Led by 23 points from Box Elder’s Pernell Morsette, Class C earned the 122-79 win. Maki added 18 points in the loss after connecting on four 3-pointers and Philip Malatare of Arlee pitched in with 16. Dawson Fowler and Darnell Lefthand, as well as Gabe Gudlach led Class A with 10 points each.

Round robin play continued Friday with four games total. The first contest featured Class AA going head-to-head with Class A. Yet, it was the AA squad that came out on top, knocking off Class A 145-103 led by Will Mytty’s 30 points. Fisher added 23 for Class AA and Huse had 16. Fowler led Class A with 15 points, Gudlach added 13 and Jarod Kingsbury of Stevensville finished with 13. Kingsbury also captured the Slam-Dunk title Saturday.

Next up Friday was the Class C team taking on Class B and thanks to a 108-89 win, the Class C team improved to 2-0. James Ramirez of Manhattan Christian led the way with 24 points; Malatare contributed with 19. Kelson Eiselein led Class B with 16, while Darrien Garcia added 13.

Unfortunately for the Class B team, it had to turn around and play Class A shortly after and in the process lost its second straight game to open the tournament as Class A got the better of B, 108-100. Jaden Graham led Class A with 16 points; Kingsbury had 15. Nate Costin was the top scorer for Class B with 22. T.J. Reynolds also had a solid game with 20 and Seth Omsberg contributed with 13.

The nightcap Friday featured Class AA and Class C. Each team was unbeaten coming into the game, but it was the AA team that won the matchup 106-89. Worster had 17 points to lead Class AA. Huse finished with 16 and Taylor England had 15. Tyler Tanner scored a game-high 21 in the loss for Class C. Runs Above and Malatare both added 15.

On Saturday morning, Class AA finished off its perfect record in pool play, rolling Class B 108-92. Worster scored 19 points, Huse and Brock Powell both had 15. Darrien Garcia had a spectacular 30-point outing for Class B in defeat.

Class B, which was 0-3 in group play, took on Class A (1-2) for third place and this time it managed to come out on top, finishing third after a 116-101 win. Eiselien led Class B with 19, Fowler paced Class A with 25. Kingsbury also ended up with 22.

When it was all said and done, the Class AA team went 4-0 after its 99-78 win over Class C in the championship game. The Class C team was 2-2, while Class A and Class B were both 1-3.
