The Light

You know, Lord, many years ago, when we were just little kids, only folks in towns had electricity. Since we were country kids, we didn’t know any folks in the country who even had electricity. We didn’t have that power source at our home, just gasoline lanterns to show us the way in the barnyard, so when we were in town for an evening visiting our relatives, which did not happen very often, all of a sudden, we noticed that the lights were beginning to start to shine along the streets. That was totally amazing to us. We ran out onto auntie’s front porch for a better look. In amazement, we watched as the lamplighter came slowly strolling down the street.

Auntie told us that the lamplighter probably had a wick at the end of that very long pole he carried. She also said that sometimes a second guy would be along, that one carrying a ladder. His job was to renew the candles or the oil or the gas mantles. We could tell where the lamplighter was by the trail of light he left behind.

You, Lord, are the Light of the world! An unknown author wrote: “When he came, there was no light. When he died, there was no darkness.” When Christ came into the world, there was no light, Matthew (quoting Isaiah) said of Him, “The people which sat in darkness saw a great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up!” (Matthew 4:16).

Thank You, Lord, that You are the heavenly Lamplighter. Everywhere You went, the midnight gloom of sin and despair disappeared before You. Psalm 27:1 “The Lord is my light and my salvation … .” You, Lord, are the light that pervades the deepest gloom and transforms lives with Your love!

Love, Mara
