Autism Walk set for Saturday

We are Autism Havre, a support group of parents of children with disorders on the autism spectrum, and the social services provider Quality of Life Concepts will hold their 2nd annual Autism Awareness Fun run, walk and stroller roll Saturday.

“We’ve been planning for about three months.” said Jessie Fuzesy, a family support specialist with Quality of Life Concepts. “We have a lot of exciting things planned for tomorrow.”

Registration will begin at 8:45 a.m at District 4 Human Resources Development Council at 2229 Fifth Avenue. For $20 people will be able to walk either a one mile or 5k route and be eligible for door prizes.

The one mile route will go north to Sunnyside Intermediate School and the 5k south to the Bill Baltrusch Nature Trail east of Havre High School.

Entrants are encouraged to come dressed as superheroes to highlight the theme of the event: sometimes real superheroes live in the hearts of small children fighting big battles.

Fuzesy said money from the registration fees will go to fund programs for children with special needs including a summer camp for elementary school aged children with autism and specialized swim lessons.

A special play area for children will be set up at HRDC, Fuzesy said.

She added that the outpouring of support for the Fun Run has been tremendous with event sponsors such as Pacific Recycling, Havre Ford and Culligan water, among others. The number of people who have preregistered has also doubled over last year.

Last year’s event drew hundreds of people not only from Havre and surrounding communities but from Browning and Helena. Fuzesy said this year she has heard people from Anaconda and Butte interested in taking part.

“I think we are going to have a really good turnout,” she said.
