Northern starts search to replace retiring provost

Rugg's tenure done June 30

Montana State University-Northern hopes to retain a search firm by the end of the week to look through candidates to replace provost William Rugg, Rachel Dean, chief of staff to Chancellor Greg Kegel, said Monday.

"Once we have a firm, it will start moving pretty fast, where we will have (the position) advertised and start reviewing candidates, but I suspect once we have a firm in place, it will be about a four-month process before we have a provost in place," she said.

She added that Northern hopes to move faster, but the position will remain open until the ideal candidate is found.

The university also created a search committee a few weeks ago composed of people on and off campus.

Dean said the firm will work in tandem with the committee to broaden the scope of the search.

"They have connections at the search firm that we otherwise would not have access to, so they may be able to say, 'Oh I  know who would be perfect for you,' and get those people to apply," she said.

Rugg, who took the position at Northern in February 2014, said Monday that he submitted a letter of resignation in January that will take effect June 30.

Dean said the provost is in charge of overseeing the quality of Northern's academic programs and Northern's accreditation. She said the job of provost requires someone who can work small details but also see the bigger picture regarding Northern's academic programs.

Rugg, along with other Northern faculty and staff, was honored Tuesday at a party for retiring staff in Northern's Student Union Building  Ballroom. Pam Civiletti, Kathy Jaynes, Bob Johnke, Janice Starr, William Swartz, Arlys Williams and Katherine Williams, who are retiring, were also honored at the party.
