Havre, area thinclads perform well in Great Falls

Taking advantage of the good weather, the Havre High track teams were in Great Falls this past weekend for the Belt-Fairfield All Comers meet.

The meet was held Saturday and featured a total of 28 teams, most of them coming from the ranks of Class B and Class C. The Havre girls finished second in the team competition on their side with 66 points, well behind Fort Benton, which won the girls meet with 104 points. The boys team from Havre, also did well, placing fifth with 28 points. Fairfield led all boys teams with 142 points. Glasgow was second with 107.

“It went really well,” HHS head coach John Ita said. “A lot of kids got personal bests. Our girls team did well and got a lot of points in different events, kind of like we have been doing and with our boys, it was our distance runners that really did well again.”

The Pony girls worked their way toward a second-place finish, with a balanced effort across the board. As she has done all season, Logan Huebsch paced the Ponies in a number of different events, but her best showing came in the 100-meter hurdles, where she finished second. She also helped Havre finish third in the 1,600 relay.

Ireland Coyne also had a stellar day for the Havre girls, getting fourth in both the 100 and 300 hurdles and helping the 400 relay team take second. Caitlyn Terry was another top performer, claiming second in the triple jump and sixth in the long jump.

Jessa Chvilicek also scored points for Havre, getting second place in the high jump, followed by Sarah Faber, who was fourth. Loni Waid also got third in the pole vault for HHS, while Kristen Nash notched a fourth-place showing in the discus. Kaylee Nystrom also got in on the act, getting second in the 3,200.

On the boys side of things, Jacob LaBrie led the way for the Ponies, as he won the 400 with a time of 53.14. LaBrie also helped a team of Austin Jones, Martin Wilkie and Ethan Roberts take second in the 1,600 relay. Havre also got fourth in the 400 relay with a team of Connor Harris, Brandon Shaw, Roberts and LaBrie.

Jones also had a standout day individually, taking fifth in the 300 hurdles and the 3,200. Roberts also managed a fifth-place showing in the 100, while Andrew VandenBos took sixth in the 3,200.

“I was really impressed with our boys distance runners,” Ita said. “Austin Jones had a really good day and a lot of those guys just continue to run good times and they keep improving. It’s been a lot of fun to watch.”

Both Havre teams will be in action Tuesday in Glasgow when a limited number of qualified athletes with take place in Annual North/East Top Ten meet.
