Girl shot in Hill County

Injury not critical, suspect held on pending charges

A girl was shot with a handgun while riding in a vehicle on a rural Hill County road Thursday afternoon, the Hill County Sheriff’s Office said today in a press release.

The gunshot wound was not life-threatening and the girl is expected to be released from the hospital soon, the release said.

Josh Herrig, 21, was arrested in connection with the incident, the release said. He was being held at the Hill County Detention Center this morning on pending charges of partner or family member assault, assault with a weapon, criminal endangerment and tampering with evidence, the release said.

Deputies began investigating the shooting after responding to a report from Northern Montana Hospital Thursday at 1:35 p.m. of a gunshot wound.

Deputies found that the girl was riding with another girl and Herrig on County Road 637 West when she was shot, the news release says.

After the shooting, Herrig left the car and fled the area, the release said. Deputies and Montana Highway Patrol troopers searched the area but were unable to find him.

Herrig turned himself in at the detention center at about 9:30 that evening, the release said.

The investigation is ongoing, the release said.
