Local Golf Report: Rotary Golf Camp is now next week

From Tee to Green...

Rotary week is a big week for golf enthusiasts in Havre. And it starts this weekend at Prairie Farms Golf Course with the annual Rotary Blast Golf Tournament.

Sunday, the annual Rotary Blast golf tournament will be held at Prairie Farms. The two-person, modified stableford tourney has always been one of the most popular tournaments on the local golf calander, and in recent years it's one of the very few stroke-play events in Havre, which makes it extra-exciting. The scoring system is based on points earned, with eagles or better netting six points, birdies netting four, pars netting two, bogeys netting one and a half a point for an actual double-bogey. Players are required to earn a certain amount of points based on their handicap to arrive at zero, and anything earned after that is on the plus side.

There's still time to sign up for the Rotary Blast as well. Just call or visit the Pro Shop at Prairie Farms.

This week was also set to be the Rotary Youth Golf Camp, but the camp has been moved to July 11-13, still at Prairie Farms. The camp is open to girls and boys ages 9 and up, and if interested, call the Pro Shop at Prairie Farms.

Also coming up on the tournament scene is the MSU-Northern Diesel Tech Tournament, which will be held July 15 at Beaver Creek Golf Course. The following weekend, BCGC will host the Havre Endowment Brewfest Scramble. For more info on either of these tournaments, call the BCGC Pro Shop.

There is no golf league this week, with the Fourth of July Holiday falling in the middle of the week. Hope you all had a great 4th by the way.

Last week at Prairie Farms, the second half of men's league continued. On Tuesday night, Bing-N-Bob's and Korb Construction tied for high team with 21.5 points. Bing-N-Bob's was composed of Jeremy and Jeff Jensen, and Lunar and C.J. Evans. Korb was made up of Kyle Miller, Scott Leeds, Patch Wirtzberger and some hack named George Ferguson. Miller also blitzed the course with a 1-under par 35 to take low gross, while Mason Sheppard was low net with a 29.5. Something about those former Blue Pony tennis players playing golf these days. Well done boys.

Last Wednesday saw Valley Furniture earn high-team honors with 22 points. The team was composed of Hoover Peterson, Dave Peterson, Mike Evans and Brent Reber. Jeremy Jensen was low gross with a level-par 36, while J.T. Schubert was low net with a 30.

In women's league last Thursday night, Schubert Agency was high team with 22 points. Micha Lee, Katie Beck, Susie LaSalle and Judi Adams made up the squad. Ali and Kelsey Ward each shot 38 to take low-gross honors, while Beck, Paula Sheppard and Kim Purkett shared low net at 31.

Last week was also a good week for local golfers away from Havre. Many Havre and former Havreites competed in the annual Whitefish Fourth of July Tournament. The stroke-play tourney is one of the best on the Montana circuit. Kyle Sheppard finished 11th in the 2nd Flight with a 245, while Matt Hedstrom was 26th in the same flight at 264. In the 4th Flight, Gary Wagner was fourth with a 238, while Billy Wagner was tied 7th at 240. Dan Wagner, competing in the senior field, was fourth in the First Flight at 249.

In Missoula last weekend, Havre's own Marc Mariani scored a hole-in-one while competing in the Griz Golf and Celebrity Gala at Canyon River Golf Club. Mariani aced the Par-3 16th hole, a particularly annoying hole with a pond that seems to lure balls into like there's a magnet at the bottom of it. I hate that hole, so very well done and congrats Marc.
