STATE CHAMPS

Havre 10U All-Stars win a state championship on their own diamond

There are few sports that offer more excitement than youth baseball. After all, you never know exactly what is going to happen and no matter what the score is, with kids 10 and under, no lead is ever safe.

Sunday, the Havre 10U All-Star team learned that lesson, as Havre nearly squandered a 9-1 lead to Bozeman in the Cal Ripken state title game in Havre at the South Softball Complex. Yet, the Havre 10U All Stars got the outs when they needed to and held off a furious rally from Bozeman to hang on for the 9-8 win.

"Our kids have been playing outstanding all season," 10U coach Britnee Delarosa said. "We got our bats back finally in that last game. All the kids started hitting. We did a good job of pitching and fielding, we have a lot of good kids up there, and I can't tell you how proud I am of them."

Early on, Bozeman and Havre were tied at 1-1, when Aaron Fuzesy belted a triple that put Havre in front 2-1. Soon after, Bodhy Lassle got an RBI single of his own and after that, a double by Jevin Jenkins put the Havre All Stars ahead 4-1.

In the fourth inning, Jenkins, who was the starting pitcher in the game, doubled in two more runs, and suddenly Havre led 7-1. The lead eventually swelled to 9-1 before Bozeman started to rally. After three runs in the top of the fifth, Bozeman found itself down 9-4 in the sixth inning. With three outs to work with, Bozeman got four runs and got the tying run on multiple times before Havre made the final out to win the game.

The tournament, which was hosted by Havre, started Thursday with pool play. The 10U All Stars dropped their first game 5-4 to Belgrade Thursday night, before rebounding to beat Miles City 14-0 Friday and Glendive 7-5 Saturday morning. The 2-1 record for Havre was good enough to win Pool A.

As the top seed from its pool, Havre took on Glasgow in the opening round of the single elimination tournament and, once again, Havre won easily, by the score of 14-0. Then, Sunday morning, Havre got revenge on Belgrade by way of a 10-6 win to advance to the title game against Bozeman.

The roster of the 10U All-Star team is as follows: Matt Huse, Aaron Fuzesy, Colter Solomon, Daxton Oswalt, Brayden Kimberling, Bodhy Lassle, Kash Keller, Logan Kinsella, Tanner Delarosa, Chason Mader, Ezra Pyle, Jevin Jenkins and Teegan Solomon.

After taking first place in the state Cal Ripken tournament, Havre has the option to go on and play in the regional tournament. Delarosa said she was unsure if the team was going to play, but that it was something she wanted to do.

"I can't remember the last time we had a 10U team go to regionals after winning state," Delarosa said. "So I think that it would be great if we got to go. We will have to figure that out and probably do some fundraising."

The tournament turned out to be extra exciting for the hometown fans as Havre won, and all in all, the four-day event turned out to be quite a success.

"It really was a great tournament," Delarosa said. "The fields are in great shape and we got a lot of really great volunteers. It was really fun and I think everyone here helped make sure it went really well."
