Local Golf Report: Rotary Blast was a hot one

From Tee to Green...

The Rotary Blast Golf Tournament is one of the few play-your-own-ball tournaments anywhere on the Hi-Line every summer. And that's one of the many reasons why it's such a popular one.

This year's Rotary Blast was held Sunday afternoon at Prairie Farms Golf Course and - under brutally hot conditions and a course playing long and tough - the annual modified stableford scoring tourney was a hit once again.

First, congrats to the Patascil team for coming in first place with a whopping 20 points. For those of you who may not know, modified stableford awards points for eagles, birdies, pars, bogeys and double bogeys. Players, based on their handicap, start out minus a certain amount of points and work their way up throughout the 18 holes, and then, the two-person team's total points to the good are added together. So, having said that, and having played in the Rotary, and formerly the Burrito Blast for many years, +20 is a really good score. Well done, guys.

Other flight winners included, Brett Gilman and Chad Edgar with first place in the First Flight, Dave and Doug Sheppard winning the Second Flight, and Brett and Jen Patrick winning the Third Flight.

The Rotary Blast is a big weekend as well, and it takes a lot of people to make the tournament go off so well. So for all of us who enjoyed the weekend so much, thanks to the Rotary Club, Jimmy Kato, Doug Sheppard, Kerry, Dawn and Ali Ward, Dave and Judy Greenwood, and Brett Gilman and has staff. And thanks to all of you who volunteered, donated and played in what has always been my favorite tournament on the local golf scene.

And the Rotary fun is ongoing, too. Starting today and running through Thursday, the annual Rotary Youth Golf Camp will be conducted at Prairie Farms.

The tourney scene also continues this weekend with a big one at Beaver Creek Golf Course, as the MSU-N Diesel Tech Tournament will be held at BCGC this weekend. For more information, call the Pro Shop at the course.

The Fourth of July holiday and the Rotary Blast weren't the only fireworks on the golf course this past week either. Saturday at Prairie Farms, Medicine Hat's Kim Schacher recorded a hole-in-one. She scored the ace on the par-3 fourth hole using a five-iron from 155 yards. Congrats to Kim.

The men's league at Prairie Farms took last week off for the fourth, but the women were still in action last Thursday. Scharfe, Kato & Co. scored high-team honors with 24 points. The team was composed of Lindsey Kellam, Carrie Kato, Liz McIntosh and Ristina Wilting. Kato was low gross with a 40, while Paula Sheppard was low net with a 29.

Lastly, it looks like the heat is going to come right back this weekend and into the weekend. Golfers, remember, drink water. I know we all like other liquids when we're playing, especially in tournaments, but when it's that hot out there on our courses, drink water, too. You'll be glad you did.
