Benefit shoots set for Havre man with cancer

People will have a chance Sunday to take part in two benefit shoots, one organized by the Havre Trap Club and the other by HR Archery Range and Repair to help a local man recently diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.

“It’s open to the public, everyone is welcome and I’ll even teach people to shoot if they want to learn,” Havre Trap Club President Jim Bachini said.

The Trap Club will host a meat shoot at the club.

For $5, a person can take part in a five-person heat. The person in each heat who misses their target the fewest times wins a prize of packaged meat.

Registration will take place at 1 p.m. at the Trap Club.

Money raised will go to Randy Martin, president of the VFW Bear Paw Junior Rifle Club, who recently was diagnosed with cancer.

Bachini said Trap Club members decided at their June meeting to have the benefit shoot to help Martin, who, along with the Junior Rifle Club, frequently uses and helps out with the Trap Club.

“We had a meeting and somebody said, ‘you know, Randy’s got cancer, we should help him out’ and we said, ‘yup, let’s do it,’” he said.

Bachini said HR Archery will host a benefit shoot at 10 a.m. that day at a course adjacent to the Trap Club.

A flyer for the event said that for $10, an archer will get to take part in two rounds where they will take aim at 10 targets. Bachini said initially the trap shoot and archery shoot were separate events. He said when HR Archery heard about the Trap Club's event they asked them if they could hold an event at the same time to raise money. Both organizations then decided to merge their events.

There will be a taco bar at noon, and a silent auction will be held at 4 p.m.

People will also have the chance to take part in a raffle for a Howa .233 with a scope and a 2017 Pro Defiant Bow. Raffle tickets can be purchased at the event.

People can donate items for the silent auction by contacting a Trap Club member, or HR Archery at 879-8090.
