National Night Out returns to Havre next week

Law enforcement and community will collide Tuesday evening for Havre's sixth annual National Night Out.

The event will be held in front of the Student Union Building at Montana State University-Northern and begin at 5:30 p.m. just as a Mercy Flight helicopter is set to land. The helicopter will stay for about an hour, event coordinator Sgt. Ryan Pearson of the Havre Police Department said, after which it has to go.

"Those who will come early will see the chopper land," Pearson said.

The aim of the event is for the law enforcement community and the public to build and strengthen relationships that will result in the curbing of crime and drug use, Pearson has said.

New this year will be a rock climbing wall, which will be brought by the National Guard.

In addition to free barbecue, a group of Havre High School cheerleaders will be face-painting and people will have the chance to dunk officers in a water dunk tank, weather permitting, that is. The donations from the dunk tank will go to the Havre Police Protective Association which will use it for charitable campaigns such as Shop with a Cop.

Unlike previous years, no live music will be performed this year, but music will be played over a sound system.

And at the center of it all, people will have a chance to talk to representatives from the many different law enforcement agencies in the area.

"We'd like to invite the community. All of the local law agencies will be there," Pearson said.

Agencies and groups will include the Hill County Sheriff's Office, Montana FIsh WIldlife and Parks, Crimestoppers, BNSF Railway police, Hill County Search and Rescue, FBI, and the Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Eagle Scouts and Venturing Scouts.

Multiple raffles, including for guns and bicycles, will be held.
