Webster's dictionary defines adopt as: to legally take another's child and bring it up as one's own.
Adoption is not at all unusual in blended families and customarily takes place when children are young and still living at home with their parents. The recent adoption of Cheyanne Dawn Hamilton-Stuart was anything but customary.
