Woman sentenced for entering house, sleeping on someone else’s couch

A Box Elder woman was sentenced under a plea agreement to six months probation Monday in District Court for entering someone else’s house, falling asleep and becoming belligerent when confronted by those living in the house.

Monica S. Morsette, born in 1975, received six months with the county jail, all suspended and credit for 22 days served, for misdemeanor theft; 10 days in jail suspended for six months with credit for 22 days served for disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor; and six months with the county jail, all suspended and credit for 22 days served for criminal possession of drug paraphernalia,  misdemeanor, a charge that was part of the original charges. The sentence was part of a plea deal that dismissed felony burglary, misdemeanor criminal mischief and misdemeanor resisting arrest charges.

A woman called Havre Police dispatch Sept. 7 to report there was a woman on her couch. Officers responded and questioned the woman on the couch. The woman identified herself as Morsette and then pulled the blanket over her face.

“Monica made no attempt to get up and began to roll over,” a charging document said.

When officers tried to pull Morsette off the couch, she became aggressive and began to fight. After a slight struggle, officers were able to handcuff Morsette.

On the way to the police cruiser, Morsette continued to struggle with officers. She also yelled loudly and cursed at officers.

The people who lived in the house said they found Morsette on the couch when the man got up to get something from the kitchen. On his way back, he intended to sit on the couch, but found that someone was already there. Morsette then began “freaking out and shouting.” The couple said they thought it would be best to just call the police and leave Morsette alone.

Morsette raided the refrigerator and spilled ice cream on the couch, the couple told officers.  Morsette told officers she didn’t know how she got there nor where she lived.

Morsette was taken to Northern Montana Hospital, where she tested positive for marijuana and methamphetamine.
