Hi-Line Volleyball Roundup: CJI off to a fast start in the 6C East

With preseason tournaments dominating the start of the 2017 local high school volleyball season, this past weekend, teams got down to the business of starting district play, and playing full matches.

The action started last Tuesday when the Rocky Boy Morning Stars swept the Harlem Wildcats in a non-conference match in Rocky Boy. The Morning Stars downed the Wildcats by scores of 25-18, 25-10 and 25-14, with Tessa Big Knife and Jaylynn Mitchell combining for 15 kills. Sean Henry added five aces. Rocky Boy also played Class C rival Box Elder Thursday night, with the Bears prevailing on Box Elder.

A big match in the 6C East was held Thursday night when North Star hosted Chinook in Gildford. In a battle of the top two teams in the conference, the Knights prevailed in a five-set marathon. North Star won by scores of 24-26, 18-25, 25-21, 25-14 and 15-13, rallying from a 2-0 deficit.

Peytan King had eight kills and Paij Peterson had 17 assists and three aces for the Knights. Kourtney Hanson totaled 11 kills and eight blocks, while Carrie Hofer had 38 digs and four aces for Chinook.

District 6C East action continued Friday night as Big Sandy swept Hays-Lodge Pole by scores of 25-9, 25-17 and 25-16. The Pioneers were balanced on offense, but Lainey Gregory served up an incredible 15 aces to go with seven assists.

Also Friday night, the Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks opened district play with a three-game sweep of Box Elder. The Hawks won by scores of 25-7, 25-19 and 25-20. CJI continued its strong play with a Saturday night win over Big Sandy, to improve to 2-0 in 6C East play.

The Hawks downed the Pioneers by scores of 25-10, 25-9 and 25-11, with Kim Ghekiere racking up 15 kills. Payton Hawks added 23 assists and Samantha May had seven aces.

Box Elder also got back on the winning track Saturday with a three-game sweep of another Class B rival. This time, the Bears downed the Harlem Wildcats by scores of 25-21, 25-11 and 26-24. Lilly Gopher had 16 kills, six aces and three blocks in the win. Harlem got six kills and a block from Eleesha Bell.

North Star also beat Sunburst Saturday. The Knights dominated the Refiners by scores of 25-11, 25-13 and 25-19. Chelsea Donaldson tallied seven kills and seven digs, while Kate Hansen had 22 assists, and Peytan King, Lily Pedersen and Saige O'Neil combined for 16 aces.

Saturday night, Rocky Boy opened District 1B play with a three-game loss to Conrad. The Cowgirls defeated the Morning Stars by scores of 25-17, 25-20 and 25-16. Sean Henry had seven kills in the loss for Rocky Boy.
