Celebrating Native American Heritage

Havre Daily News staff

Havre Public Schools last week showcased Native American Heritage including presentations in Highland Park Early Primary School.

Montana State University-Northern has events scheduled this week. See a story on Page A1 for more information on that.

The Montana Legislature in 1997 designated the fourth Friday of each September as American Indian Heritage Day. Many schools hold events in September to highlight Native American heritage.

Early last century, many Native Americans lobbied to have some kind of day set aside to honor the contributions of Native Americans in the development and growth of the United States. Individual states set aside days to honor Native American heritage, and in 1990, President George H.W. Bush set aside November as Native American Heritage Month.

This page has a small selection of events at Highland Park. Visit an album at http://www.havredailynews.com to see more photos of those events.
