Third-graders visit care center for Veterans Day

By Julianne LaSmith

Northern Montana Care Center was treated Friday by a visit from the third-graders from Lincoln-McKinley Primary School in Havre in observance of Veterans Day.

They serenaded an audience that included the care center's veteran residents.

Dale Herd, PA-C, a retired U.S. Army major who works on the orthopedic surgery team at the Northern Montana Specialty Medical Center gave the Tribute of Gratitude at the ceremony.

The veterans were presented with an honorary plaque and a specially designed cap.

Helen Mueller, a retired U.S. Navy lieutenant nurse who served in the Korean War, recited "In Flanders Field" from memory, as she does every year.

After the presentations, the children sang for the residents and then shook hands with all of the veterans.

In Flanders Fields

John McCrae, 1872 - 1918

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place, and in the sky,

The larks, still bravely singing, fly,

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead; short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie

In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe!

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high!

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders fields.
