Lights beat Bears in overtime

It's clear, the Frontier Conference is going to be fun to watch this winter. And in the first game of the year, the Montana State University-Northern Lights and Rocky Mountain College Battlin' Bears put on a show. In the end, the Lights prevailed with a 99-93 overtime win Friday night in the Armory Gymnasium.

Senior Charles Porter scored a layup and sank a free throw with :08 left in regulation to pull the Lights even with the Bears at 81-81, and Devin Bray came up with a steal seconds later to ensure overtime. Northern had trailed by as many as six points in the second half, after making eight 3-pointers and building a 42-38 halftime lead.

Rocky would take a quick lead in overtime, but Porter made another and-one, and Anthony Harper hit a shot with 1:13 left to give the Lights a one-point lead. Then, with :26 left, Justin Dunsmore buried a three-pointer as the shot clock expired to put the Lights up four, before Devin Bray and Adam Huse sealed the win with six free throws in the final :20.

"I just went to the basket to try and get the two," Porter said of his last second heroics. Getting to the rim, that's what I do best, and I was fortunate to be fouled on the bucket."

Porter led six Lights in double figures with 21 points, while Huse hit four of Northern's 13 triples on his way to 19. Ryan Reeves and Gabe Porter each scored 14 as Northern shot 56 percent from the floor, and that offset Rocky's tremendous effort from Latirelle Franklin and Jared Samuelson, who combined for 61 points.

The Lights (1-0, 6-2) take on 12th-ranked Carroll in Havre Saturday night.

Bears stop Skylights

The MSU-Northern women were short-handed for their Frontier opener Friday night in Havre, and RMC took advantage. The Skylights led 15-12 after the first period, but ultimately fell to the Battlin' Bears 69-54. Rocky used a 17-2 run in the second quarter to overtake the Skylights, who lost their third straight game against an NAIA opponent.

Brandy Lambourne led the Skylights, who host Carroll Saturday night, with 17 points.
