Lights sweep duals, find mat success in Great Falls

It was a busy weekend for the Montana State University-Northern wrestling team. But after a week off for Thanksgiving, the Lights didn’t show any rust.

The No. 12 Lights were in Great Falls Friday for the Argo Duals, where they went a perect 3-0. On Saturday, Northern took part in the Heritage Inn Open, and, a Lights’ squad that entered just 10 grapplers and held out several key starters, still finished fourth in a tournament that featured some top-level competition.

Friday, Northern started its busy day with a dual against NCAA Division II Simon Fraser University, and the Lights dominated, scoring a 24-16 win. Nick Kunz, Brandon Weber, Chase Short and Steeler French all picked up key victories for the Lights. MSU-N then blasted Northwest CC 37-10, with Landon Bailey, Matt Weber, Dylan Veis, Brandon Weber, Andrew Bartel, Short and Isaac Bartel all winning. The Lights then closed out the Argo Duals with an impressive victory over upstart Northwest Kansas. The Lights won 31-16 behind wins from Matt Weber, Veis, Brandon Weber, Andrew Bartel, Short and Isaac Bartel.

Saturday, the Lights turned their attention to the Heritage Inn Open, where they would be in bracktes with rivals like Providence and Eastern Oregon, was well as top NJCAA sqauds from North Idaho and Northwest CC. Simon Fraser, and the top-ranked NCAA DII teamin the country, McKendree, as well as Minot State, were also in the field. Wrestlers from Arizona State, Washington State and BYU were also among the competitiors in the field in Great Falls.

And even without some of its big guns, Northern posted strong results. Isaac Bartel reached the 197-pound championship match, where he found a rematch with SFU’s Morgan Smith. The two wrestled Friday, and while Smith won again on Saturday, it was a slim, 6-4 decision.

At 184 pounds, French reached the semifinals before falling, then battled right back to beat Providence’s Justin Harbison for third place. Andrew Bartel also wrestled to the semifinals where he lost to Arizona State’s Jace Peterson. But, Bartel bounced back to beat opponents from BYU and McKendree to place third.

True freshmen Kunz and Short also had outstanding weekend’s for the Lights. Kunz reached the consolation match at 125 pounds Saturday, but wasn’t able to wrestle due to the six-match rule, so he was awarded fourth place. Short also finished fourth at 174 pounds. Bailey added a fifth-place finish for the Lights at 133 pounds.

Next up for the Lights are back-to-back road duals, and a tough tournament to finish out 2017. Northern travels to North Idaho this Saturday, followed by a trip to take on Eastern Oregon Dec. 14 and the Reno Tournament of Champions Dec. 17 in Reno, Nevada.
