Ponies swim in Great Falls

The Havre High swim teams opened their season with their only meet of the year inside the friendly waters of the Havre Community Pool. Now, the Blue Ponies will venture into someone else's waters.

On Friday and Saturday, the Ponies, of head coach Bill Kilgore, will be in Great Falls for a pair of meets hosted by Great Falls High and CMR. Friday, the Ponies will compete against the Bison, the Rustlers and Class A rival Hardin in a short meet, and Saturday, Havre will take part in the Great Falls Invitational, which will feature Havre, Hardin and most of the Class AA schools.

Both meets will give the Ponies a chance to swim against top competition, and continue to progress. And while it's early in the season, Havre's two meets in Great Falls will also be the last for the Ponies before Christmas break.

HHS looked strong at last weekend's Havre Invite, especially the Pony girls, who were within shouting distance of champion CMR. Senior Amelia Miller looked to be in top form, while freshman Kobi Burchard also made an outstanding high school debut. Jillian Reighard, Hannah Lunak, Lacey Huseby and Jessica Otto are more veterans for the Pony girls, while Megan Miller, Hannah Pratt and Natalie Verploegen also performed well at the Havre Invite.

On the boys side, the Ponies were led last week by sophomore Jacob Miller, who won the 100-meter breaststroke and placed in two events. John Klein and Ammon Lines also raced well for the Ponies, while Noah Gjesdal, Paxtin McCann, Logan Twombly and Riley Kilgore looked strong as well.

But as good as Havre raced at home, this weekend's meets will certainly be another step up in competition. However, that's exactly what the Ponies are looking for as they continue to progress, with the goal of peaking in February.

Friday's meet in Great Falls will start at 4:30 p.m. and Saturday's Great Falls Invitational will get underway at 11 a.m. Both meets will take place at the GFH Pool inside the Swarthout Fieldhouse. The Ponies will then be off until Jan. 5 when they travel to Hardin for the Class A Invitational.
