The Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team brought a four-week road odyssey to an end with a pair of emphatic wins over the weekend. The Lights were at a tournament in Vajello, Calif., on Friday and Saturday and MSU-N showed good form, winning two games against good California NAIA competition. On Friday night, the Lights bested Menlo College, 87-62 then took care of a tough California Maritime Academy squad on Saturday night. "I thought in both games we did a really good job of building leads and keeping...

  • HHS golf hosts Havre Invitational

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor [email protected]

In high school golf, being able to play on your home course is a huge advantage. But in Havre, it's even more so. Not only are Havre High golfers more familiar with home layouts like Beaver Creek golf Course and Prairie Farms, but the Blue Pony players are much more accustomed to playing in Havre's blustery golf conditions. And that's what the Ponies will try to take advantage of when they host the 2010 Havre Invitational golf tournament Saturday at BCGC. The Havre Invite will be an 18-hole tournament and will feature teams...

The 2010 NAIA volleyball season is already a month old and the Montana State University-Northern Skylights still haven't played a match on their home floor yet. But that hasn't seemed to bother the Skylights who are off to their best start in six years. And before MSU-N can make its home debut next weekend against Lewis-Clark State and Westminster College, the Skylights have one more road match to take care of. Tonight at 7, the Skylights will be in Great Falls to take on arch rival, the University of Great Falls and head...

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor [email protected]

The Montana State University-Northern football team is young. The Lights have few seniors on a talented roster for 2010. And now the Lights' resiliency is about to be tested. On Saturday afternoon in LaGrande, Ore., the Lights (1-1, 1-1) will try to bounce back from a heartbreaking 17-13 loss to Montana Tech when they take on winless Eastern Oregon University (0-2, 0-3). And not only is MSU-N looking to rebound from its first loss of the season, but the Lights are hoping to win in Community Stadium for the first time since...

With preseason tournaments behind them, area high school volleyball teams are turning the attention to conference play. George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor [email protected]

The Havre High boys and girls golf teams finally beat the weather. After missing last weekend's Browning Invitational, and a rainy week of practice, the Ponies were back on the course on Saturday in Lewistown. Havre saw good competition at the Lewistown Invitational held at the Judith Shadows Golf Club. On the girls side, the Blue Ponies got a first-ever Top 10 from freshman Katie Beck, who shot a solid 107. In just her third tournament of her career, Beck finished in seventh place overall, but was just five strokes out of fi...

The 2010 Frontier Conference football season couldn't have started any better for the Montana State University-Northern Lights. A dominating conference road win was exactly what the Lights were hoping for on the dawn of a brand new season. But that 20-3 win at UM-Western already seems like a long time ago. And with the first of two bye weeks behind them, the Lights turn their attention to pushing forward when they host Montana Tech in their home opener Saturday at 1 p.m. inside Blue Pony Stadium. "I think we got some things o...
