It’s summer. It’s hot out and football season still seems like it’s a long way off. But not for the quarterbacks of the Frontier Conference. No, those select few that will guide their teams through the fall, and towards a Frontier Conference championship, have been hard at work all summer long, gearing up for the season ahead. And make no mistake, the Frontier Conference in 2014 will feature some of the very best quarterbacks in all of the NAIA. The Blue Ponies will be in Helena on Saturday for the final regular season meet of the year. After the Helena meet, HHS will have exactly two weeks to prepare for the all-class state swim meet. But Saturday will be the final time Havre swimmers race against live competition. And the Ponies will certainly get good competition in Helena. Both...

  • Warriors pummel Skylights

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

The Montana State University-Northern women came into Thursday night's game in Lewiston, Idaho off not one, but two big wins. The Lewis-Clark State Warriors didn't. The Warriors beat Northern 59-43, ending the Skylights two-game Frontier Conference winning streak. Northern was able to hang tough early on, trailing by just a few points for much of the fi...

But Thursday night in Lewiston, Idaho, the No. 19 Lights didn't do that. Instead, Northern fell behind host Lewis-Clark State right away, and the result was a 70-61 Frontier Conference road loss. David Maddock hit a 3-pointer at the 15:46 mark to put the Lights up 9-6. However, LC's defense kept the Lights scoreless for the next 8:42 of the game while the Warriors went on a 15-0 run. That put LC ahead...

  • Lights pummel Northwest College on the mat

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

On Thursday night at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse, the Lights dominated the Trappers 31-3 in front of a large home crowd on what was Northern's final home match of the season. Included in the dual was a rousing senior-night win from 157-pounder Tay Todd. The former Bozeman High star pinned Clint Jacob in 2:21 and was...

  • Local ropers succeed in Great Falls

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

For several Hi-Line cowboys, this weekend's Montana Pro Rodeo Circuit Finals in Great Falls was a rough one. For others, it was a lucrative three days. The MPRCF was held Friday through Sunday at the Four Seasons Arena in Great Falls, and a pair of area team ropes came away with the most success. Zortman's Shane Schwenke and teammate Kory Mytty finished third in the average for the weekend, as well as the year-end championship and a trip to the Dodge Circuit Finals this spring in Oklahoma City. Schwenke and Mytty garnered...

  • Havre High girls stay close with Bison

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

In a rare Monday night game, the Havre High girls basketball team did all it could to hang with the Class AA Great Falls High Bison. In the end however, the Bison had just enough firepower to hold off the Blue Ponies. On Monday night at the Swarthout Fieldhouse in Great Falls, the Ponies fell to GFH 48-40. But the eight-point margin didn't speak to how well the Ponies played. The two teams played a seesaw first half in which the lead changed hands several times with neither team leading by more than three points. GFH seized...

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

Being shorthanded isn't easy, especially when it looks like the women's side of the Frontier Conference is loaded yet again. George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

The Montana State University-Northern wrestling team didn't accomplish everything it set out to do in Clackamas, Ore., but the Lights came pretty close. Northern was in Clackamas for two days of wrestling, including a close 22-20 dual loss to the Clackamas Cougars in a Friday night dual. Clackamas is the top-ranked NJCAA team in the country, and the Lights were open at 125 pounds, or the dual might have come out differently. But as tough a loss as it was on Friday night, MSU-N bounced back in a big way during Saturday's...

Tonight, the Lights (12-4, 1-0) take step two in the process when they visit Montana Tech in Butte. Northern wraps up a weekend swing at UM-Western on Saturday. The Lights got off to a strong start in conference play with a hard-fought win over a...
