  • Irene: Wet, deadly and expensive, but no monster

    DAVE GRAM, SAMANTHA GROSS,Associated Press

NEW YORK — The storm that had been Hurricane Irene crossed into Canada overnight but wasn't yet through with the U.S., where flood waters threatened Vermont towns and New Yorkers who returned to work had to make do with a slowly reopening transit system. The storm left millions without power across much of the Eastern Seaboard, left at least two dozen dead and forced airlines to cancel about 9,000 flights. It never became the big-city nightmare forecasters and public officials had warned about, but it still had the ability to...

  • Flood worries and some relief in Irene's wake

BETH FOUHY, SAMANTHA GROSS - Associated Press

NEW YORK — Stripped of hurricane rank, Tropical Storm Irene spent the last of its fury Sunday, leaving treacherous flooding and millions without power — but an unfazed New York and relief that it was nothing like the nightmare authorities feared. Slowly, the East Coast surveyed the damage, up to $7 billion by one private estimate, and worried of danger still lurking: the possibility of rivers and streams swelling with rainwater and overflowing over the next few days. The live-aboard couple attempted to outrun the storm and got caught up in the high surf and wind. They were rescued by local fire and rescue personnel. NAGS HEAD, N.C. NAGS HEAD, N.C. — Weaker but still menacing, Hurricane Irene knocked out power and piers in North Carolina, clobbered Virginia with wind and churned up the coast Saturday to confront cities more accustomed to snowstorms than tropical storms. New York City emptied its streets and subways and waited with an eerie quiet. With most of its transportation machinery shut down, the Eastern Seaboard spent the day nervously watching the storm's march across a swath of the nation inhabited by 65 million people. The hurricane had an e...

  • NYC mayor: Manhattan man arrrested in bomb plot

    SAMANTHA GROSS, Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — Mayor Michael Bloomberg says an al-Qaida sympathizer who plotted to bomb police and post offices in New York City has been arrested. Bloomberg announced Sunday the arrest of 27-year-old Jose Pimentel on numerous charges. Pimentel was arrested Saturday. He is accused of having an explosive substance that he planned to use against others and property to terrorize the public. The New York Police Department's Intelligence Division was involved in the arrest....

  • Sept. 11 marked with reading of nearly 3,000 names

LARRY NEUMEISTER, SAMANTHA GROSS - Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — The names of the Sept. 11 dead, some recited by children barely old enough to remember their fallen mothers and fathers, echoed across ground zero Sunday in a haunting but hopeful tribute on the 10th anniversary of the terror attack. "Hope can grow from tragedy," Vice President Joe Biden said at the Pentagon. Weeping relatives of the victims streamed into a newly opened memorial at the spot where the World Trade Center stood. They placed pictures and flowers beside names etched in bronze, and traced them w... Full story

  • Flight attendant could get prison for grand exit

DEEPTI HAJELA SAMANTHA GROSS Associated Press Writers

NEW YORK — No fed-up worker has ever said "I've had it" quite like Steven Slater. Prosecutors say the JetBlue flight attendant flipped out over a fight with an agitated traveler Monday, cursing at the passengers before grabbing some beer from the plane's galley and making a grand exit down the emergency slide at Kennedy Airport. He has been charged with felonies and elevated to folk-hero status by thousands who shrugged off allegations that Slater endangered others and praised him for his take-this-job-and-shove-it moment. S...
