  • The NRA can't keep me quiet anymore

    Ed Tinsley

While in politics, I allowed myself to be bullied by the NRA. No more. I cannot help but feel like there is something I could have done to prevent this calamity. But I will no longer allow myself to be intimidated by groups like the NRA. I don't need an assault weapon to go hunting with my son. Ed Tinsley I am a lifelong hunter, a veteran of the United States Army, and a former elected official here in my home of Yellowstone County. But above all I consider myself a parent, and so I will be forever haunted by the slaughter of...

  • Looking for good to come from tragedy

    Tim Leeds

Correction: The phone number for the Havre Center for Mental Health is 265-9639. In today's print edition of the Havre Daily News it was listed incorrectly. Local mental health care officials say an ironic result of the Dec. 14 tragedy may lead to increased awareness, understanding and treatment of mental illnesses — even though no evidence has arisen that the shooter who killed his mother and then 20 first-graders and six teachers and administrators at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newport, Conn., before killing himself h... Full story

The Blue Ponies come out of the holiday break set to host the Class A Invitational Saturday at the Havre Community Pool. • Skylights outlast Dickinson State

    George Ferguson

If someone would have told the Montana State University-Northern Skylights they were only going to make one 3-pointer prior to their Frontier Conference game with Dickinson State, Northern would have seen trouble on the horizon. Yet, the Skylights did make just one long-range shot and still found a way to scratch out a 59-56 win over the Blue Hawks Thursday nig Northern's Rachelle Bennett, right, tries to get around a DSU defender during Thursday night's women's game in... Full story

  • Pony boys search for a win tonight in the corral

    Daniel Horton

As far as wins go, it hasn't been the most productive start to the season for the Havre High boys basketball team. But as the young team continues to take the right steps forward, and continues to grow and get better, the Blue Ponies enter the new year knowing they could earn their first win. The Central A Blue Ponies started the season 0-5, including an 0-2 start to their conference schedule. But their next two opponents have a combined 1-10 record, and coming out of a very productive break, the Ponies could come away with o...

  • Lights ground feisty Blue Hawks

On Thursday night at the Armory Gymnasium, the No. 22 Lights had to fight and scratch for a 72-65 win over the Dickinson State Blue Hawks, in a game that...

  • Chinook looks for committee members

    Zach White

The new year brought the Chinook City Council to take a look at its appointees, boards and committees at Thursday night's meeting, and city officials are looking for a few civic-minded Chinook residents to volunteer. The biggest need right now is to fill an all-new Ordinance Committee that will re-examine all of the Chinook city ordinances to find which are good, which need to be updated and which need to go away altogether. The head of the streamlining committee, council member Keith Hanson, is looking to have a five-member... Full story

  • Our View: Hi-Line Darts and Laurels

    Tristan

Laurel — Best of luck to Steve Bullock as he begins his four-year term as Montana governor. Bullock promises to carry on most of the policies of his predecessor, Brian Schweitzer, but perhaps with a little less showmanship. We hope the new governor can work at least on some issues with the state Legislature, even though they are at opposite ends of the political spectrum. Dart — Federal regulators have decided that Exxon Mobil Corp. was responsible for making last year's oil spill on the scenic Yellowstone River. Had Exx... Full story

  • When fictional characters attack

    Pam Burke

Pam Burke We here at Pamville News — employees, interns, volunteers, hangers-on and laze-abouts — in no way condone, excuse or otherwise support violence in any form. That said, though, when you hear that a man in the UK was beat up by two guys dressed like Oompa Loompas — orange skin, green hair, hoop pants and all — ya just gotta laugh. It may be the law. It really could be. The UK's Daily Mail Online reports that the Norfolk police said two men dressed like the fiction...

  • Montana Gov. Bullock vetoes 12 bills

    KATHRYN HAAKE, Associated Press

HELENA — Gov. Steve Bullock vetoed a measure Friday that he says would have allowed a way for anonymous political organizations to contribute to campaigns through religious groups. House Bill 217 would have exempted religious organizations from campaign finance reports. The measure would have given so-called "dark money" groups the opportunity to donate to campaigns through churches without any oversight or regulation, Bullock said in his veto letter. The Democratic governor also vetoed 11 other bills Friday, including one t...
