    PETER SVENSSON AP Technology Writer

NEW YORK — Verizon Wireless made the long-awaited announcement Tuesday that it will start selling a version of the iPhone 4 on Feb. 10, giving U.S. iPhone buyers a choice of carriers for the first time. New Yorker Wes Moe can't wait. He has wanted one to accompany his iPad and Mac, but held back because he shares a Verizon plan with his wife, a BlackBerry user. "I'm super happy with all those other Apple devices, and I want that phone in my hands," said Moe, 32. In the U.S., the iPhone has been exclusive to AT&T Inc. since i...

  • Bill would count existing dams as renewable energy

    MATT VOLZ Associated Press

HELENA — State lawmakers are considering a bill that would make it easier for utilities to meet the standard for renewable energy production, a proposal that conservationists say would make the standard meaningless. The state's largest utility is also opposed to the bill because it would mean a windfall for hydroelectric power generators but end up costing its customers more. The measure sponsored by Republican Sen. Debby Barrett, of Dillon, would allow electricity produced by large hydroelectric facilities to count toward s...

    MATT GOURAS Associated Press

HELENA (AP) — Republicans started scaling back state budget expectations Tuesday in order to pave the way for dramatic cuts despite objections that the move will hurt services for the elderly and disabled. The GOP starting point is 8 percent less than what Gov. Brian Schweitzer put in his proposal. Republicans don't like the way Schweitzer balances the budget by transferring money out of various state funds. The governor argues revenue will increase to match spending faster than currently projected thanks to an improving e...

    Tim Leeds

Symbol on 1920s quilt misinterpreted A nearly century-old quilt raised some eyebrows at the Holiday Village Mall in Havre during December, and some discussion at the monthly meeting of the board of the county museum Monday. The topic was a quilt made by residents of the Bear's Paw Mountains in the 1920s for an ill neighbor, which included the names of all the people who worked on the quilt embroidered on squares within the pattern. The quilt was taken down from display after people walking through the mall complained to mall...

  • Noriega returns to Panama a largely forgotten man

    JUAN ZAMORANO, Associated Press

PANAMA CITY, Panama — More than two decades after the U.S. forced him from power, Manuel Noriega returned to Panama on Sunday as a prisoner and, to many of those he once ruled with impunity, an irrelevant man. Some Panamanians feel hatred for the former strongman and rejected American ally; a few others nostalgia. But as he returned to his native country for the first time since his ouster, it seemed like few people had any strong feelings at all.
