  • Majestic: A wintery Beaver Creek Park

    Paul Dragu|Updated Jan 15, 2017

Majestic. That's how Beaver Creek Park Superintendent Chad Edgar has described the 10,000-acre park during the winter. "The park is just majestic in the winter. It is quiet and very peaceful out here," Edgar, who lives in the park, said. "We got a lot of people that just go for their drives in the winter. It's a great time to see wildlife, and see big whitetail bucks." It's no secret the park has far more visitors during summer months than winter ones - "usage is very minimal...

    Alex Ross|Updated Jan 13, 2017

Indian Health Services will reimburse the Chippewa Cree Tribe for a portion of the cost associated with recent breaks and contamination of the water system on Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation that had left some reservation residents without access to water. The office of Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont, announced the funding in a press release. Daines had urged Mary Smith, deputy director of IHS, in a Jan. 5 letter to provide funding for repairs to the water system. Tribal Water Resources Interim Director Dustin White said the a...

  • Brandt starts as Havre Daily News photographer

    Paul Dragu|Updated Jan 13, 2017

Floyd Brandt traveled more than 2,000 miles in a week from Soldotna, Alaska, to Havre to be a photojournalist for the Havre Daily News. There were some moments, he said, when the going got tough. “Going through the mountains of British Columbia is always pretty challenging,” Brandt said. As if traveling from Alaska through Canada during winter’s height isn’t tough enough, Brandt’s Chevrolet Blazer developed some troubles during the trip. He said his SUV’s intermittent starting troubles proved more of a burden than all th...

    Paul Dragu|Updated Jan 13, 2017

Volunteers with Court Appointed Special Advocates, CASA, said Monday the need for their services in this region is great - and the need for more of them is dire. The purpose - the reason for their existence - Melanie Vinberg said, is reunion, when possible. "Our CASAs' goal is to have reunification with families. We're there for the children, but we're also there for the whole family," she said. "If reunification doesn't work, we are there for termination or guardianship or...

  • Save Montana highway jobs

    Updated Jan 13, 2017

Shortly before Christmas, men and women across Montana were notified that the road construction projects they were depending on to put presents under the tree this year would be canceled. The jobs they were depending on to provide for their families in 2017 would be lost. The construction of critical state highway projects would be delayed or defunded altogether. Our highway fund is facing an unprecedented budget shortfall, and unfortunately it’s just one small part of the budget crisis that Gov. Steve Bullock handed the 6...

  • It's a clean life, if you don't weaken

    Pam Burke|Updated Jan 13, 2017

My mother-in-law used to say, “It’s a great life, if you don’t weaken.” I think it’s an old Irish saying. It definitely sounds like something the Irish would come up with — a truism that’s somehow both positive and depressing at once. They nailed it. I wrote last week about my water issues, as in I don’t have any water flowing to my house. I could write volumes about how that affects your daily life, but I’ll just throw out a few words to prompt you to write it in your head f...

  • Hello God, it's me, Mara

    Updated Jan 13, 2017

You know, Lord, with a New Year having just arrived, we might think about a MAN OF THE YEAR. The one we’re thinking about is not picked by any group. His picture will not be found in any newspapers. Folks may not even recognize him if they were to pass him on the street. Our Man of the Year is in the middle class income bracket. He gets up every morning by 6:00 so that he is on the job by 8:00. He works hard, not only because he wants to advance, but because he believes his employer deserves a fair deal. Our Man of the Y...

  • Practical Pastoring: Your spouse Book Five

    Updated Jan 13, 2017

The next letter that Pastor Dan wrote was to my wife Karrie on 9-18-95. He wrote to her in partial response to Karrie wondering what her role was as the wife of the pastor. Dan said that part of her role is carrying the load while I was off doing whatever God was asking me to do. This is not very glamorous at times. Karrie and I had experienced a difficult year in the life of the church and we made it through by the grace of God. Pastor Dan reminded Karrie that I needed a down-to-earth, levelheaded, fun-loving wife. He...

  • Out Our Way:

    Updated Jan 13, 2017

Mark 11:1-6 Out our way, I was blessed to have a friend in Charlie who took me with him on some of his cowboy jobs up on the Tiger Ridge. It was under Charlie's tutoring that I learned something of what cowboying is all about. I began to become familiar with the area, where the water was, where the "favorite hiding places" of some of the more skittish stock were located, and above all the various trails. I even began to become familiar with certain bulls, especially "Junior,"...

  • Pony boys play two on the road

    Chris Peterson|Updated Jan 13, 2017

The Havre High boys basketball team’s overall record might be 2-6, but the only record that really matters is 1-2. That is the Blue Ponies' mark in the Central A conference and also the number HHS will try to improve tonight in Browning. • Lights leave Hawks feeling blue

    George Ferguson|Updated Jan 13, 2017

Senior night on the wrestling mat is special, it's emotional and it's sometimes difficult. Not only for the seniors being honored, but for their teammates who want to do so well for them and send them out in the manner they deserve. For the Montana State University-Northern Lights, and their three seniors, Thursday night's home finale against the Dickinson State Blue Hawks was all of those things, but most of all, it was fun and it was exciting. Led by outgoing seniors Tommy...

Now, however, the No. 15 Lights (2-2, 13-3) don’t have to worry about the road for a while — three weeks to be exact. Tonight, Northern starts a six-game league home stand with a visit from Rocky Mountain College. M...
